2 adults 1 child would like to travel from the north to Bournemouth at the end of July, return.

I've looked on Virgin and the Trainline and its going to cost a lot. Anyone know if I can get a railcard that will reduce the fare.

Its ages since I've done this journey and I'm shocked at nearly £300 (for 3) for a standard return.

you could get a family railcard for £20 then get 50% of your childs fair and 20% off yours

family rail card will cost you £25 and reduce the fare.... otherwise keep your eye out for discounts in the paper - or check some of the online discount forums?

we have a family railcard which cost us £24 but you can share it with another family (you don't need to travel with them!) One of the adults and the one child can get hugely reduced fares. I think its a third of childrens fare and 60% of the adult fare or the other way around. The card is valid for a year.

lots of info here

It can be quite time consuming but if you spend an hour or 2 playing about you could probabaly save a fair bit

Just searched Newcastle to Bournemouth on 31 july, returning a week later.

Family rail card, outward journey advance 5 ticket - £15, rtn, std open ticket £115. Total cost £134

Sorry - that was on thetrainline.co.uk

Also, its sometimes worth buying 2 singles as opposed to a return, not travelling in peak times and specifying which train.

if you try single journeys instead of booking returns on the GNER and virgin sites you can often get bargains.

A standard return from Edinburgh to Leeds was going to cost about £70, but with a railcard and single journeys we got my mum first class travel for £30 return.

in fact I just did a quick check for you, putting in newcastle as the starting station and with a railcard and buying single tickets it's £50 for the outward journey and £70 for the return. I think if you were to break the journey down into buying tickets from individual station to individual station (if you have to make changes) you can get it down even further. and they date of travel affects it; fridays are more expensive.

Thank you for all the advice and links. I will get the railcard. I can see that I will need to spend some time searching and be flexible which we are.
