Weekend in Europe - where would you go?

Looking for inspiration - going away for wedding anniversary, 2 nights in Europe early April and for some reason I'm stuck for ideas!

Oslo is my favourite but probably better in summer. It's a bit dreary in the cold months but amazing when it's warm. It's quite compact but you can do an awful lot in a weekend.

Porto and Lisbon are lovely and lots to do and see.
Budapest is fabulous. You've got the history ,great bars and of course the thermal baths.
Belfast has a lot to offer and I prefer it to Dublin
Bratislava is lovely on a warm day and compact. It's lovely sitting by the danu e, people watching on a nice day!
Tiriana is interesting and cheap and on the second day you can take a short bus rife to the cable cars and into a national park. ( i think it's a national park anyway.) The views are great!

Many of Spains's towns near airports are perfect for a weekend. I particularly liked Santander, although for many years Malaga was a favourite.
I could go on, Europe has so many wonderful places that are ideal for a weekend break. Dh liked the Netherlands and Belgium as well!

I haven't been to Prague for years , but found it a bit underwhelming one big castle and that was about it
Prague was so much more than a castle! We ran out of time to see and do everything we wanted! I would say it's probably my second favourite after Oslo.

I’d love some thoughts on Madrid?!

Madrid is fabulous. Great museums, galleries, food and awesome night life. The public transport is one of the best in Europe and you can always get one of the high speed trains to Segovia and Toledo, you'll be there in 20 minutes (crazy I know Grin). All museums, including the Royal Palace, are free after 4pm. What I don't now is if the free pass is for EU nationals or includes other nationalities as well.

I've been to lots of cities but Madrid has been my favourite.
The most amazing buzz , weather , cheap but great food and wine, fabulous museums and galleries!

Skegness is great. Mablethorpe just down the road.

Bingo, chips, those little windmill things people stick in the sand - and no need to get on a plane for the nervous flyer.

I’d suggest Barcelona. Loads of interesting sights, great restaurants and it’s got a beach.

So pleased to see all the people praising Madrid. I'm going there next week and so looking forward to it.

Prague is great - I highly recommend booking the history of communism tour as you get to go into an old Soviet nuclear bunker. Also watch the film Anthropiod before going. It stars Jamie Dornan & Cillian Murphy as Czech agents plotting to kill Heydrich in Prague during WW2 - very moving.

I am going to the Prado and the Royal Palace (I've booked those tickets in advance) but probably Reina Sofia as well and also want to go to the gardens near the Prado, I can't remember what they are called.

Innsbruck, Salzburg, Zagreb or Ljubljana if you only have two days

JustAquaMentor · 02/03/2025 17:53

San Sebastian- without a doubt.
Fly to Bilbao and then bus outside the terminal to San Sebastian.
Amazing beach, foodie heaven and lots to see. Very reasonably priced hotels.
I've visited near on ten times now and would go again at the drop of a hat!

BIWI · 02/03/2025 19:55

Agree San Sebastian is amazing - it's not the easiest to get to though, if the OP only has 2 days.

MargaritaPracticallyCan · 02/03/2025 19:58

Copenhagen or San Sebastian - visited both recently, loved both.
Edited to add - we had to land in Bordeaux rather than Bilbao due to strong winds, and had to find out way south by coach - so definitely not a trip to do if you only have two nights away!

BashfulClam · 02/03/2025 20:51

I’d go back to Prague tomorrow if I could, amazing place.
