Passport validity for travel to Germany

Oh lord, I am about to book flights BA to Germany over the Easter to visit husband's family. Just noticed he has only end of July in his EU passport. Can anyone please help if EU passport (NL) with this validity will be ok for returning to the UK where we live? It will have over 3 months on our return. 🤯😭

You really need to check this carefully. Look at the detail below.
By the way you can do a passport checker on lots of travel sites like TUI etc. You just input the relevant dates and it tells you whether it's valid or not.

My passport actually expired Jan 2026 but it's this ten year rule as below and for Easter I had to get a new one. It was turned around in precisely 10 days by passport office.

Your passport must: have a 'date of issue' less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it may have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago. have an 'expiry date' at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area.

OK I've just seen you have an EU passport. Not sure about that now but do a check.

Thank you. Yes, called passport office, Home office and the Dutch embassy. Nobody knew or wanted to advise over the phone.

In the end a friend called a friend who is former passport control officer and it sounds like dh will be allowed to enter the country with 3 months validity. Grin But what a stressful morning! He has applied for a new passport too, so might just might get the new one in time.

I just went to EU country with three months and a bit left. I was using my EU passport. No problems.

I am assuming he has EUSS so valid is enough from experience. Otherwise it's for duration of the stay which would be quite difficult if one intends to stay... Forever😁

Presumably the husband, an EU citizen living in the UK, has post-Brexit Settled Status - in which case his passport just needs to be in date when he re-enters the UK from the EU. He won't need a ETA if he has Settled Status.

Thank you. Yes, Dutch national with the settled status.

Thank you everyone!
