How old is your baby? Do you BF or FF? And how long is the flight?

Apz · 19/02/2025 20:19

He will be 10 months old when we fly going with my husband the journey is four and half hours on the plane

Spare outfits! For you & baby - we’ve had a poop explosion on our first flight (she was 4 months old) & also when 2 years threw up all down me on landing.

A pouch with only essentials in it - wipes, nappy, cream, nappy bags etc so you can just take the pouch to the toilet and no faffing with a big bag.
More nappies than you think you’ll need, in case of delays. Same if you formula feed.
A few sachets of Calpol
Teething rings, comforter and small, quiet toys
A change of clothes for you and LO and a couple of zip lock bags.
Finger food
A couple of muslins and a couple of dribble bibs

What @Forgottenmyphone said.

I would suggest to take the buggy up to the gate but depending on the arriving airport you may not get it back until baggage claim so a sling/carrier may also be handy.

A water bottle you can fill up after security, ideally one he can suck on as it will help with the pressure on the ears.

Any comfort item, teddy, blanket etc, has to be in the handluggage in case hold luggage is not there.

Is the flight price reasonable enough to pay for a seat for baby and take their car seat to sit them in? 4 hours is a long time on a plane with a baby on your lap who just wants to crawl around. When we flew with Ryanair to Lanzarote, it was a £25 supplement for child on lap, but the flights were only £40 so we just paid that.

If that's not an option, take a sling. We found that much easier to hold baby in when they slept as space so was limited for arms etc.

We flew when dd2 was 6 months old and found the following stuff helped:

Calpol sachets in both mine and DH's hand luggage
A ziploc bag with 3 or 4 nappies, nappy bags and wipes in each hand luggage
A ziplock bag with 2 spare outfits for baby in each hand luggage
A sterilised bottle in each hand luggage and a couple of cartons of formula
A baby carrier for in the airport
Spare clothes for both me and DH
Muslins - especially large ones that can be used as a blanket
Small teething toys, hand held toys

We also did a boots order to collect once airside of nappies, formula, food pouches and snacks

My DD turned 1 while we were away so we travelled with her on my lap. Never again. Despite sleeping for 90 minutes out of a just over 2 hour flight, while awake she was a little monster! Pulling my hair, grabbing people around me, kept pulling my top down (so think about what you wear!) and at one point she pulled my boob out.

We had all the things. Stickers. Books. Snacks. Fiddle toys. She just wanted to bully me. She’s in her own seat next time, thankfully.

Practicalities.

  • 2 zip lock bags each with a full outfit change for baby.
  • spare zip lock for dirties.
  • we ended up with a pile of rubbish on our table which was really awkward as it was already cramped. I’ll take a couple of pedal bin liners next time.
  • all the snacks
  • pouches
  • medication
  • calpol sachets.
  • we put a reusable nappy over her disposable nappy in case of poonami. She did indeed have a poonami and it saved us.
  • travel changing mat as there are no changing tables in aeroplane toilets (actually I’m not sure if there was a tiny fold down one - if there was it was far too small for my baby!)
  • we have a GB Pockit and it was an absolute hindrance in the airport. It was in the way. Ended up putting her in the sling. When they take the pram from you at the gate you don’t see it again until the baggage carousels. it is not waiting for you at the other side. Don’t believe them. We were glad we had the sling then. We checked pram with the rest of the bags on the way back.
  • formula. You can take flasks with hot and cold water over 100mls through security. You can also take a reusable water bottle over 100ml with made up cordial or just water (when travelling with children (we had a 4 year old too) through too. We were not made to empty this.
  • change of clothes each for the adults. Mine would always throw up on me if I didn’t have spares!

Have a great time!

I would make packs of ziplock bags with nappy, nappy bag, smaller zip bag of wipes, and perhaps a small zip bag with a smear of bum cream. Then it’s just a matter of picking up one zip bag per nappy change and it’s all there.

Changes of outfit in seperate zip bags.

Bring plenty of zip bags to cater for the return flight.

A decent paperback book to read like Faraway Tree or something for reading out loud for hours if your voice and a cuddle are only things that will soothe him. (Memories of keeping a whole ED quiet once …)

I gave calpol 20 mins before take off to mine at that age because their ears hurt with the pressure. Also something to encourage them to swallow, depends on where you are with weaning.
