What to pack for Italy in April?

We're doing a 14 day train tour of Italy in April, starting in the South and ending in Milan. We need to pack very lightly, so pretty much three outfits that we'll wash at our Air BnBs.

i know the temperature varies quite a bit, but what would you take? And what sort of coat/ jacket will be best?

TIA

I've just come back from Rome and days were in the mid teens so by April you'll be fine in tshirts. Just have fun and remember flip flops are for the beaches

Thank-you so much for your reply, it's really helpful. I think we'll be doing too much walking for flip-flops anyway!

Pack/wear a light padded jacket for the evenings as it might be chilly in the evenings. Trousers, sturdy shoes, T-shirts and a light jumper.

Definitely layers - depending where in the south,, it's likely to be warmer than Milan, and like anywhere the weather can be very variable anyway.

For a trip involving lots of train travel, I would want comfort - so leggings (unlike most of MN i love tbem!) or joggers, t-shirts and a zip up fleece. I'd also take a cagoule, not just in case of rain but as an extra layer even when dry. .

One issue you might have is getting washing dry. If you're lucky and have a heated towel rail/ radiators/outside drying area & good weather, you will be fine but without those, things might take a day or two to dry..Try to take tops that will dry more quickly - do a practice run if you can and consider whether you can fit in another outfit, 3 seems a bit tight.

I find baby wipes useful for freshening up clothes - TMI perhaps but eg freshening up legging gussets or t-shirt underarms and that will dry more quickly than a full wash
