Weather in Summer near La Rochelle

Hello!

Obviously I realise none of us knows what the weather will be in the future!!

But was hoping to hear from people who have holidayed in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine/La Rochelle vicinity in late July/early August to hear what kind of weather you got.

Have found a lovely holiday complex about an hour inland.

We don't particularly want somewhere too hot. Online says highs around 24 degrees which is perfect but lows of 16 sounds more like the UK!

Any tips on this or other aspects of the area welcome x

I've done this area a few times. It's generally very nice but there's always been a few wet or cooler days in my experience. For example Summer 2023 I had a fortnight and the second week was really hit and miss weather wise, needing a cardi and lots of rain showers The first week had been glorious, consistently in the higher 29s. A few years before that I'd had similar but more changeable, so lots of cloudy times, odd showers and then lots of lovely bits too. These days I've decided it's just not consistent enough for me, the one main requirement i have for my summer hols is near as damnit guaranteed dry, sunny weather.

Oh and to add as a child we went to this area every year and I don't remember it being anything other than perfect !

It can be very hot in the summer but it can also be no better than the UK that’s why we had 3 weeks in Arizona/Nevada last year, the locals thought we were mad, high of 48c low of 32c, mad dogs & Englishmen 😎

Thanks @Desmondo2021 and @seenabeena ! That's really helpful. Found the loveliest holiday complex but all my DD wants is to be in a pool so it wouldn't work if it rained. I have another option near Carcasonne so may go for that instead!!

We were near there last year around then. You got to think - west Atlantic coast- brings in the rain. Last year was rainy about 25-30% of the time.

I've stayed in the area twice in the past five years. First time was for two weeks and we had weather ranging from 23 degrees to about 36 degrees. Mostly warm and sunny, no rainy days. We stayed there two years ago during a heatwave for a week and it was unbearably hot - 38 to 40 degrees every day.

The southern half of France has tended towards excessively hot summers the last few years. It is the Atlantic Coast though which means unpredictability so you can't guarantee warm, dry weather. You need closer to the Mediterranean if you want it to be more reliable, although it can get very hot there.

La Rochelle and Ile de Re are absolutely beautiful though and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the area.

We have been to both the Vendee and Carcassonne in the summer. The Vendee was far hotter and Carcassonne had more rain...

Actual weather last year: https://www.accuweather.com/en/fr/la-rochelle/136293/july-weather/136293?year=2024

SweetBaklava · 17/02/2025 12:07

We were in the area mid-August last year and had a mix of rainy weather at the beginning of our trip, heatwave in the middle, and warm and sunny towards the end... pot luck really 👏🏻

SweetBaklava · 17/02/2025 12:08

Actually we were there end of July/early August!

Janefx40 · 17/02/2025 19:42

@SweetBaklava @DecafDodger @BellissimoGecko @lavenderlou @DancingHippos thank you for your replies. I'm still mulling. The resort looks great and is a better price (because of the weather probably!) but we do want sun if at all possible!

Thanks again

We were about half an hour inland from larochelle at the end of July last year and it was freak weather, about 40 degrees. Well, I don’t know if it was freak weather but the locals kept telling us it was an unexpected heatwave. Bloody lovely! Spent so much time in the pool.

TheMousePipes · 17/02/2025 19:57

Three years ago the weather was 42 on the trot for three days - made our tent an oven and the sun was so fierce the fabric of the roof degraded so much we needed a new tent! Last couple of years have been around 25 so far easier to bear.
