Holiday for DH's 50th

We went to the Maldives for mine, at Easter a couple of years ago. Weather was amazing. DH thought maybe a week at Disney and a week on a beach for his but we've been put off the US for the minute as it all seems so odd there right now. So we are wondering where else? It'll be in July holidays, budget about 10K. DH would like to go outside Europe so any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks

The US is fine, my sister lives there and I just got back from a business trip to Vegas. I landed the day of his inauguration and it was all normal so I'm not sure what you mean. I'd do that if that's what he really wants to do. Otherwise I would say something like South Africa, Canada perhaps.

Japan? You could do Disney Tokyo for a couple of days, and then explore various cities.

I have just got back from the US. I won't be going back for a while. Its a shit show waiting to happen.

And in any event there are far, far nicer places in the world to visit.

I agree with South Africa; beautiful country and so many things to do. August is the middle of winter but good for a safari in Kruger National Park- some amazing lodges! How about a trip to Victoria Falls?

ShanghaiDiva · 15/02/2025 19:56

vancouver, Vancouver island and whistler?
Borneo?

@Spirallingdownwards no idea what you mean, I go out for work a lot, going there for holidays this summer. Feels like people are talking themselves into a hysteria at the moment.

Definitely wouldn't be supporting Trump by visiting America, we went to Singapore for two weeks for mine with side trips to Perth and Malaysia. Japan would be my choice. But you should ask him really, maybe he wants a Harley Davidson or Mustang drive across the Mojave desert

Okay, so if Disney is off the table for you atm, where else would HE like to go? We visit the US regularly and if that's where he wants to go, I'd go there. Having said that, I wouldn't choose to go to FL in July - it's too hot and humid for me.

How many of you will be travelling? £10k sounds like a lot, but depending on whether it's just the two of you or kids as well, July is high season for many places. If you want to go long-haul and stay in nice hotels that money may not go as far as you'd like. Asia is usually a good bet though for keeping prices down. Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Borneo and Vietnam are all possibilities in UK summer, although some areas are better than others so be careful to avoid monsoon rains.

Safari! We did Tanzania and Zanzibar but wouldn't massively recommend Zanzibar. Tanzania was incredible.

I went to the states for my 60th two weeks after the election. It was fine if more expensive than usual .

The Trump supporters are insufferable dickheads. No need to have to out up with such nonsense when there are so many other places with lovely people in the world.

StormingNorman · 16/02/2025 18:09

What exactly do you think Trump is going to do to you at Disneyworld? You’ll be fine.

Cynic17 · 16/02/2025 18:25

Definitely a safari in South Africa. £10k is a bit on the low side for a really good one, but SA is excellent VFM at the moment. August is perfect for seeing the animals. We went 10 years ago and it was the best holiday we've ever had.

We spent 11 nights in Namibia and then flew to Cape Town for a few nights after. Hired a 4x4 with roof tents to explore Namibia including Etosha for animals. Less than £10k for 5 of us.
