Can you travel on a passport until it expires?

Ds's passport was a five year one and we got it when he was 10 months old or so. he is 5 in November. Will it be ok?

depends where you are going. I recommend you call the embassy of the country you are travelling to and ask their rules, some countries further afield like a clear month, or three....others like europe should b fine.

Most places ask for three months on your passport - others like the US require 6 - mainly so that they are pretty certain that your passport won't expire whilst you are there.

If I were you, I'd renew it now before the summer rush, just to have it done and out of the way.

I travelled to Malta with 5 weeks left, I rang the embasy first (here in London) and they said it was fine to the ver last day, as long as it han't expired before i returned to UK

Within the EU, and some non EU member countries like Switzerland, it is fine up until expiry. Outside Europe it is normally 3 months or longer so you'd need to check specifically with the Embassy. You can renew now and get credit for the balance of months but allow a couple of weeks to get it back before travelling.

Quite a few Asian countries require six months' validity.

I got caught out with this, got to New York only to be turned round at immigration and sent home
they didn't believe I was on a 3 day shopping weekend with my friends.

If he is 5 in November, and he got it at 10 months old, isn't it valid for another 16 months or so, anyway ??? I don't think you have to worry about renewing it until next year!

We are off to fueretventura in 5 weeks and they've insisted on 6 months with first choice.
