Im abit late at planning and have nothing booked apart from flights we land in PE and depart from Cape Town.

We are slightly worried about safety and were considering cancelling this trip as we will have a 3yr old and 5yr old with us and i ended up reading alot of scary forums about SA safety last night which i wasn't fully aware of before booking ! yes my fault i know. However two SA friends have tried to reassure us that if we follow all safety advice we should be ok.

2 nights near addo park

3 nights kynsea or plett bay (as a base)

2 nights Franschhoek or Stellenbosch

4 nights CT (not sure which area would be good ) If anyone can reccomend safe secure locations please let me know

It’s a rough idea :)

The roads are dangerous, very high number of RTAs. Even my South African friend thinks they are hair raising though they've had some improvements in recent years due to massive safe driving campaigns.

I haven’t been recently but around addo, look at in the park itself or try Zuurberg Mountain Village or Camp Fig Tree.

Knysna try Undermilkwood (self catering) or somewhere on Leisure Isle with somewhere with direct water access.

Cape Town, I’d stay at the Waterfront. Be mindful that some places say Waterfront area eg. Sea Point or Green Point but are more Waterfront adjacent.

My parents have just been (in their 70's) and I was worried sick about safety. They thought it was great. Absolutely loved it and didn't feel unsafe at all. This is from my mum who won't walk down some of our high streets here!

Thanks, yes my SA friends told us to drive only in the light and to not overtake and to drive sensible, I was told that the roads in Thailand were the most dangerous in the world and we spent 3months (all over Asia) driving with no issues but we are very careful with the kids.

Thanks yes a SA friends told us about Undermilkwood I think it’s a sign I should book it there 🥰 I also saw africamps they looked really cool aswell with a hot tub and play area for the kids but I’m not sure about safety with those.

pleased I could be the sign you needed for Knysna @Hellobell

sorry, I don’t know anything about Africamps, but that’s not to say they aren’t any good.

I went to cape town last Easter with my then 5 year old and 22 month old twins. I honestly felt safe at all times. But we did follow basic safety advice-

  • Only went out in daytime
  • Drove on well established routes with nothing on display and in the daytime only
  • Stayed in places with security. For example in cape town stayed in an air bnb in camps bay which had security.

We stayed just over a week in Cape Town then travelled to Fransloeock for 4 nights. The whole of fransloeock felt safe. And the wine vineyards here are great with playgrounds and activities for the children whilst adults enjoy tasting the wine.

As we were back in time for childrens bedtime each day. My dh and I would sit on the terrace in the evenings and so many restaurants and supermarkets do home delivery.

Also we went up table mountain in the cable car and this was completely safe.
