what to take to the seaside?

hello all!

I am wondering if anyone has any tips on what to take to the seaside for a 3 year old and a 15 month old? I'm thinking: all the usual clobber (nappies, wipes, change of clothes, snacks, etc) plus UV tent, bucket and spade type things, towels, cossies, travel potty, suncream, hats, and drinking water. Oh, and hubby for extra hands!

Anything else you would take? Thanks for tips, have not done this before!

Smother in suncream, tie on a hat and let them go au naturel. Are they likely to stay in a tent? They get v hot inside.
Armbands/rubber ring
A wristband with your mobile no. just in case they wander.

poncho style towels are good as they stay on.
big carrier bag like the reusable tesco bags to chuck all the wet/sandy stuff in.

If taking a buggy for naps, a big cloth to drape over it as a sunshade.

No=one else been to the beach then?

podsquash · 08/05/2008 20:19

Wow, thanks so so much, Chippyminton. Those are all great tips. Will make sure the suncream is waterproof! any more anyone!

We went today.Your list sounds fine Pod.We took a picnic with us.I am sure your kids will enjoy it

ChippyMinton · 08/05/2008 20:20

Last one:
PULL the buggy, don't try & push it.
Go early and leave before lunch, or go after 3pm to avoid the strong sun.

OverMyDeadBody · 08/05/2008 20:21

lol

I wouldn't bother with a travel potty.

A camera

OverMyDeadBody · 08/05/2008 20:23

a good book for you

donbean · 08/05/2008 20:26

plastic bags for wet sandy stuff.
fill up a couple of big bottles of water and bob them in the boot of the car to wash off feet prior to getting in the car.

flip flops of washable sandles.

where are you going??? any where nice?

donbean · 08/05/2008 20:27

flip flops OR sandals meant to type.

ChippyMinton · 08/05/2008 20:27

someone on here recommended talc for getting sand off feet when you leave the beach IIRC

Surfermum · 08/05/2008 20:47

One of the most useful things I find is having a bottle of water with a sports top (so you can squirt it). It's handy for washing off hands before eating, getting sand out of eyes/mouths/orifices/cuts.

..... or maybe it's just my dd who gets caked in sand .

Which beach? Wherever it is you'll have a great time.

iamdingdong · 08/05/2008 20:50

my top beach tip which I discovered on Monday is to use socks as a glove to brush sand off feet adn legs

OverMyDeadBody · 08/05/2008 20:57

talc definately works to get sand off feet. Really really effectively.

Thanks everyone! We will maybe try Brancaster Sands - it is so lovely and flat with lots of sandy sand. And the parking is not too far from the beach and so on. Full of folk, mind, but then that is part of the fun for kids I guess! Got a great sand drill from Great Little Trading which I can't wait to try out - I mean, let the kids try out! We'll prob aim to leave around 8 am or so and get there around 9 so they can sleep in the car on the way home after lunch...at least, that is the plan.

Hope others make it to the seaside too! Have a good weekend when we get there...

Thanks for your tips everyone. Had a lovely morning this morning although I had packed for hot weather and it wasn't that hot in the morning with the sea breeze. The talc was AMAZING at getting off sand! How wonderful. It seemed like a much less painful way of getting the sand off their delicate skin than scrubbing at it with water.

Can recommend the sand drill from GLTC for anyone whose small boy is obsessed with digging.
