@Echobelly which food markets would you recommend?

Sadly it was far too long ago to remember which ones! I just remember the galleries

My tuppence: don't expect the locals to be as 'accommodating' as you might find on the Costas!

I speak pretty good Spanish and both my teens studying
and we are always made to feel incredibly welcome whenever we visit Spain (every year for a long weekend)

I would really like advice on where to go to eat. Where would we find the best tapas bars?

Dogthespot · 16/02/2025 07:25

Does the city rent non-electric bikes? Or just electric?

Dogthespot · 16/02/2025 07:26

Obviously I know private companies will but I’m hoping for the convenience of drop off and pick up of the city stations

Book a tour with Tours Tilla on insta you can find them.

Me and the extensive travellers I went with all agree that having Javier Santos the owner of the company doing the tour was one of the best things we've ever done and it was a huge group, and a volunteer donation
He was so funny passionate and knowledgeable about Madrid,

Highly recommend doing it on one of the early days you are there

amipretnant · 16/02/2025 07:38

And skip the central market and do Mercado de San Fernando for local vermouth, one of the best steaks I've ever had from one of the sellers, Iberico ham, and all the gorgeousness of Spanish food

They're all good if you avoid directly around Playa Mayor. I've stayed in Cheuca, La Latina and Malasana and never had a bad experience.

Oh, there was one time when we were fairly central but found a locals' bar and the guy sitting next to us told the waiter off for offering us the 'tourist tapas' and told him to get the good stuff out. We didn't make it to dinner that night!

Teens more likely to enjoy prado or reina Sofia?

ApolloandDaphne · 30/03/2025 11:07

I'm resurrecting this thread as I have more questions. What does a day look like for Spanish people in terms of food? We tend to eat all our meals early 8am/noon/6pm. I don't usually eat any later than 7.30 pm. I know that is not how Spanish people eat. An I have some guidance so I can plan our days. Also is Madrid a smart city or casual. I'm a jeans/linen trousers, top and trainers person. What is the dress code when out in the evening? If I was going to London I would know exactly what to take but this is flummoxing me! Thanks.

@ApolloandDaphne we are going in April and not intending on eating dinner until at least 8.30pm. I usually have a big, leisurely hotel breakfast, skip lunch or get a snack while walking and have a very late dinner. I don’t think anywhere will be open for dinner at 6pm unless it’s just tapas with drinks.
To the poster who went with teens and they went to the cinema-were the films in English? I fancy going to the cinema while we’re there but only speak a little Spanish.
