Hi all
I think I pretty much post this every year but it's that's time again lol
We are looking for holidays for this year either august or May half term.
My kids love our villa holidays but we are bored of the same old holidays.
We want to do something fun! We still want some relaxing days by the pool but need plenty of other activities to keep them busy. Zip lining, watersports, cycling, mountains, lakes etc.
Any recommendations?
We'd prefer a villa as I like a pool to myself. We wanted to do Lake Garda but finding a private pool is seeming impossible in our price bracket
Budget is about max 5k for something good
Where have your teens absolutely loved but where you felt relaxed and rested after the holiday?

Bump - with a smaller budget...

StScholastica · 09/02/2025 18:16

Florida is a world away from lake Garda but most villas have pools and there is lots to do especially if they like wildlife.

StScholastica · 09/02/2025 18:18

Smaller budget? Snowdonia is lovely if you get the weather.

The theme parks don't appeal to me lol is there loads more to do than that? Have always wanted to do America but wouldn't have a clue where to start

Have a look at Austria some good ideas on here as there are swimming pools, lakes for kayaking & sup walking off ski lifts or mountain biking. All linked by free buses

Where do you normally go? How about alps or the dolomites? Somewhere with cable cars that will give you access to the mountains (hiking, mountain biking, up into snow/glaciers); maybe some
serious adrenaline with haggliding (not sure what the age limit would be) or via ferrata.

Island hopping in Croatia - snorkelling , water parks on the sea, tubing and canyoning , kayaking

Meredusoleil · 09/02/2025 18:38

I have a 16 yo and a 13 yo and we are going on a Greek island cruise 🤞

TizerorFizz · 09/02/2025 18:45

Families worldwide have loads of ideas within your budget. You might have to give up your private pool but dc would be entertained. Croatia and Slovenia look interesting with loads of activities for teens.

Thanks everyone.

I'm really interested in the Austria, morzine, tignes etc as looks perfect for summer but find the accommodation and travelling confusing (doesn't take much)
We probably want to look at that for May half term maybe then have a proper sun holiday somewhere in August
Croatia looks pretty good would any of you have recommended suggest split? Or Brac Island looks good.

Bear in mind there will still be a lot of snow in the mountains in May depending on the height you are looking at, so some walks won’t be open. We went in Chamonix area in late June/early July and a few paths were only just becoming accessible without crampons.

Brac island , Korcula both amazing , also Cavtat near Dubrovnik, can do all sorts of activities on the river near split - all quite close together for multi centred trip

We've just booked a holiday to the Austrian Alps in August with our children. Can't wait!

Could I please ask what accomodation you booked? I assume you'll be flying and then car hire?

Ah ok, I don't mind that. I think really I want one holiday that's a bit more scenic where it doesn't matter if it's hot and time for pool lazing provided I do then have another holiday booked for later in summer to do that. Want my cake and to eat it!

That’s similar to families worldwide. There’s quite a few activity holidays in Europe.

Croatian island is a good call. Vis is quite sporty for instance. Key thing is to chose a villa where they can head off and do their own thing/get away from their parents, esp the 17-year-old

reluctantbrit · 10/02/2025 07:52

You don't really get villas in the Alps with your own pool, it's not really a done thing.
In Germany you have plenty of local lidos and lakes for swimming for example - not in May though.

I think you may need to split, especially if you have another pool option this year.

I know lots of people say Austria or French Alps but I think the German part of the Alps is equally lovely. Fly to Munich and you can go either directions, plenty of outdoor persuits and you don't go necessarily high up.

Aintnobodygottime · 10/02/2025 08:07

Austria has a lot of hotels with pools! Freshwater swimming will be chilly in May I’d have thought. You can also get decent rental houses in both Germany and Austria but as someone else has said the pool thing isn’t common.

I love all the ideas you’re getting too.

Inspiremeaholiday · 10/02/2025 08:29

We’re doing the Azores in August. It’s a microclimate so should be good in may too. Not sure about the pool situation but there is loads to do.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/02/2025 09:25

We went to Zell am See with our teens (13,16) last summer. Stayed in a ski chalet apartment block with a pool. Took the chairlifts up the mountain for walking, swam in lakes (Lake Zell has several dedicated swimming beach areas with diving platforms, pools just on the inland edge, benches, sunbathing, changing rooms etc. we didn't hear bikes, but we could have done. We made it a bit of an adventure by going by train from the UK and having a long weekend in Amsterdam en route (also Vienna on the way home).

crackofdoom · 10/02/2025 18:11

Currently planning our Interrail trip this summer with a 15 and a 10 year old. We're planning a mix of cities (Berlin, Vienna, Budapest) and mountains (Transylvania, possibly Bulgaria, maybe the Bavarian Alps). The Teknikmuseum in Sindsheim has been mooted, as has wolf and bear watching in the Carpathians. Definitely lots of swimming (thermal baths in Budapest, lakes on the outskirts of Berlin), hiking, probably looking for street art and skate parks etc.
