Iceland- ice cave/ glacier

Hiya
We’re off to Iceland with our 16 yo son in half term.
We will have a car but very aware that trips will be weather dependent! We’ve booked a northern lights trip and also a trip to the glacier lagoon which is the one I’m rethinking. My son would love to see an ice cave, are they safe this time of year and can anyone recommend a day trip from Rekyavik, ideally with a glacier included?
we are planning to drive the golden circle, and possibly the south coast/ snaefelness. We’d also love to go to Hvammasik, can’t wait!

thanks

@Puffinshop Sorry to jump on ops post, but do you know where I can find further information about this walk? I have had a google but couldn’t find the walking routes/ where to park etc. We fly out this weekend and very much looking forward to our 2nd trip to Iceland. Thanks!

Edited

Hi @ASunnyWeekend, no problem to jump on at all, hope you enjoy, i can highly recommend. We used the Lava Stream – Volcano in sight loop from
Grindavík. On Komoot hope that helps!

All, sorry after another recommendation, is Into the Glacier worth it? I’d love to go as the other one too far away ( we chose to say in Rek the whole time on advice based on potential weather in Feb). My son’s doing glaciation for GCSE history and I think he’d love it but my husband is a bit sniffy about the man made ice cave! What does everyone think, or would you just go to Solheimajokull
and walk to the tongue? We have a free day after doing golden circle and driving the south coast to Vik and want to maximise so into the glacier could be good? Thank you!

See maps and so forth here - the Fagradalsfjall area not the more recent eruption sites around Sundhnúksgígar. You have to pay to park but it's great 👍

Thank you very much!

Obviously geography not history 🤦🏻‍♀️. We’ve booked Into the Glacier tomorrow as it’s looking quite wet in the afternoon, the lovely lady at our hotel raved about it, so I’ll report back!

Thank you! Pleased you had a good walk. We stayed in Reykjavik’s last time but travelling across to Hofn this time (staying in Selfoss on the way out and back) and have booked a tour to the ice caves over that way. We decided to book that one as like your husband we wanted the natural ice cave rather than a man made one. Is there any chance you could book a hotel towards Hofn and just continue on from Vik?

Hi everyone
@ASunnyWeekend , hope you’re having a fab trip!
As everybody was so kind, I thought I’d pop my thoughts from our trip here in case they help anyone else.

As per my pp, we loved the walk recommended by Puffinshop.

We stayed at a fairly new hotel, Grandi by Center which was near the harbour and lots of restaurants. The hotel was nice, staff amazing, good breakfast, gym and small spa area with 2 hot pools and a sauna for certain classes of room. This was great after long days.

The Into the Glacier trip was amazing! What was so brilliant was learning all about the different layers within the glacier, seeing the natural crevasses and understanding how they are formed. Highly, highly recommend, even my sceptic husband was impressed ( the journey there and back was also fab!!)
Hammasvik hot springs were brilliant, such an amazing setting, we swam in the 2 degree fjord and loved every second of the experience. Driving all the way around the fjord was just stunning. I’d definitely recommend.

the golden circle was great, sadly we had torrential rain at Thingvellir, and probably because of this it was our least favourite spot but still great. Loved the geysers, the waterfalls ( saw a rainbow!) and stopped at some amazing little hot springs where we basked in sunshine! Our final stop of the day was Kerid crater , we got there for sunset and it was magical!!

the next day we drove down to Vik via Seljalandfoss ( loved walking behind the falls), Skogafoss and we walked up to the glacier mouth at Solheimajokull which was fab. I had originally wanted to go to glacier lagoon but it was too far. We did see pieces of the glacier in the water so next best thing!! We then went to Reynisfjara and finally Reynisdrangur before driving back in the rain!

on our last day we wandered around Reykjavík , went to the lava tunnel and the bridge between continents which was fab to see.

Food wise, we found it as expensive as we’d been told. We took itsu noodles with us for lunch along with loads of snacks- not only did this save us money but there were very few places to eat and those we found were chocca full of bus trips, so it saved time too.

in the evenings we had soup one eve ( lobster, it was delicious!), went to Reykjavík Kitchen which was disappointing, went to the Grandi Matholl food market which was great. On our last night my husband had booked an amazing Michelin tasting menu at Matur Og Drykkur for our birthdays- highly recommended for a special meal and Icelandic food with a twist.

We were lucky with the weather in that there was no snow or wind disruption, we were able to drive around easily. It was still bitterly cold and windy and v wet at times but we had the right clothes and it didn’t spoil anything.

We had the most amazing time, didn’t spend as much as we had budgeted as we drove ourselves around and didn’t do the ‘big’ hot springs but we loved the fact that those we did were quieter. Iceland is stunning, so much natural beauty and it was super educational. Thank you all for your help and happy trip planning to anyone considering going, I highly recommend it.

Thanks for your update @2025istheyeari , enjoyed reading what you had done - I have just spontaneously booked myself to solo travel there end of March for 4 days (Im going to be mainly at the Northern Light Inn - which is very near the Blue Lagoon and might just catch some auroras out there as well).

We had a fantastic trip @2025istheyeari. I’m
pleased to hear you also had a great time. For anyone considering a trip to Iceland- do it! We received a few surprised faces when telling people we were taking our just turned 6 year old to Iceland but she absolutely loved it - and has asked to return next year. We were very lucky throughout our trip and saw the northern lights, diamond beach was full and included some significant sized icebergs and the glacier cave we visited (over towards Höfn) was only found 3/4 months ago and is significantly bigger than the usual caves. In the end (because of the imminent eruption) we decided against a hike near the volcano and instead chose to drive through Grindavík and stop at the bridge between continents. An absolutely fantastic trip
