Is Greece in July too hot?!

LemooonSlice · 06/02/2025 23:17

Planning to visit Corfu for a week at the end of July. Wanting to spend time at the beach mainly. DC all teens. Will it be too unbearably hot?

Have only been to France up til now, high 20s / low 30s. Thanks!

Too hot would mean unable to go outside for a lot of time /dangerous to spend time on the beach I suppose. Wasn't sure if being near the sea would help reduce temperature, or if we'd be able to siesta through the worst!

We’ve been to Corfu several times in august. It’s the greenest Greek island and personally I’ve never found it too hot. Always been able to go out and about in the day and go to the beach etc. you’ll need to take a good load of mossie repellent though!

I love Greece but we have ruled it out for July/August as the risk of severe heat is too high and we wouldn’t enjoy it.

We last went to Corfu in May and it was perfect.

Was the sea warm enough to swim in comfortably in May?

mrsnjw · 07/02/2025 09:48

We went to Corfu in August last year. It was around 33 and fine. Lazed around pool, beach and went on a boat trip. August is a hot month wherever you go and there has been a risk of fires since forever. We had a fire in kos in 1997. Greece has always been hot 🔥

I've been to zakynthos and corfu in May and it was lovely. All the spring flowers too

Baggyprincess · 07/02/2025 16:56

Went to Corfu in July a few years ago. It was during a Greek heatwave, mid 40s Celsius feeling like mid 50s. It was unbearable! Hotel with aircon and by the beach, only comfortable when in the water. Unless you tolerate heat very well I wouldn’t recommend it.

TwistedWonder · 07/02/2025 23:27

I’ve been to Greece about 30 times and always went July/August when my DS was at school.
It’s hot. In my experience I’d say ranging from low 30’s right up to over 40 - that was Lindos in Rhodes.

We smothered my DS in SPF 50 and he spent most of his day in the pool so it was fine but I wouldn’t go that time of year now I don’t have to.

I now go in June and Sept but last year Greece had a heatwave all summer at it as 38 in early June where we were.

mrsnjw · 08/02/2025 09:25

Skiathos was chilly in August. Well I thought it was! Look at the southern Greek islands and avoid all the ones further south. Rhodes and Crete are very hot. I prefer north now as the islands tend to be more green.

mrsnjw · 08/02/2025 09:26

Sorry I mean look at the islands further north.

Landlubber2019 · 08/02/2025 09:30

We went last year August and spent alot of time in the air conditioned apartment 😧

ChanelBoucle · 08/02/2025 09:32

We went a couple of years ago at the end of July and it was horrible. All we could do was lounge by the pool because doing anything else seemed unfathomable. I didn’t really feel as if I’d had a proper holiday by the end, really I could have been anywhere hot, and it was bloody expensive. I’d rather go to Scotland than holiday in those temperatures. We’ll stick to the UK or coastal west or northwest France if holidaying again in July and August. Anywhere Mediterranean is too hot in mid summer these days.

mitogoshigg · 08/02/2025 09:33

Depends on how you deal with heat. The climate is suited to getting up early and sightseeing, long leisurely lunch, afternoon nap then hitting the beach for a couple of hours late afternoon before a fun evening. Far too hot to be out midday until mid afternoon

Yes, May is lovely. Apart from the wasps.

Sassybooklover · 08/02/2025 09:34

It's hot in most places in July/August. I have been to Corfu in August and yes it was hot. You can probably expect mid-30s to higher-30s. Just make sure you take insect repellent, a good high factor sun screen and you should be fine. I have been to several of the Greek Islands, and they all are hot.

jennylamb1 · 08/02/2025 09:41

Yes, we went July last year and it was high 30s/low 40s and they were experiencing a number of heatwaves that had basically all joined up. Bearable if you could get into a pool but we couldn't get out and about so much.

TwistedWonder · 08/02/2025 09:49

Last summer Greece seemed to have a 4 month heatwave. From early June to late Sept temperatures were well above normal.

I went in June and it was high 30’s every day and still high 20’s even walking home after midnight. Then late Sept Rhodes was still hitting 30 degrees but cooler in the evenings.

I love the heat but have to say I don’t miss going in the main school holidays anymore.

Notstrongandstable · 08/02/2025 09:54

Rhodes last August. If you like being in the water or the air con literally all day then it's fine. However I found it boring and we were only there for a week. Too hot to do anything! Even the 5 mins to supermarket was painful as the car was burning inside!
First time to Greece and it's beautiful and the food was amazing but never again in our summer school holidays
Do not stay anywhere without aircon!

LemooonSlice · 08/02/2025 09:54

We have to go in school holidays. And have a very low budget! But also we'd love to spend a week on the beach/in the sea. Not worried about sightseeing too much, could do that in the evenings. Thank you for everyone's advice, especially re mosquitoes as they LOVE me!

We did it and found it too hot. Basically you can go out til maybe 11-12 and then from 4. Which is tricky with teens.

Newgirls · 08/02/2025 09:56

How about the alps? Go near a lake? You can get wonderful weather and good prices

Nannyfannybanny · 08/02/2025 10:02

What about may half-term. We went then also in march,it was 28c just nice,we hired bicycles. Also been in October but that wouldn't help you. I could cope with temperatures over early 30s. We were lucky our DD primary school allowed us to take off time in term time. We only did this occasionally.

Honestly I’d have a rethink if the mosquitos love you. Corfu is very green so it’s worse than a lot of places. I went through 5 cans of spray and was still bitten to death.

TwistedWonder · 08/02/2025 10:13

May half term could be an alternative. We did it a few times and it’s much more manageable - probably mid/high 20’s

Or have a look at the more Northerly tucked away islands Skiathos doesn’t get as hit but it can be pricey. Or look at Thassos. Thats on with TUI and pretty reasonable and being further North it’s cooler. Or Halkidiki maybe.

Oblomov25 · 08/02/2025 10:27

Last year was unusually hot with heatwaves. We are off to Turkey end of June, hoping for heat. 32 degrees? All air con in TUI hotel so should be fine.

Lolypoly14 · 08/02/2025 10:34

We were in Rhodes end of June/early July last year and some days it was 40 + degrees.

It was fine on the beach - had a sun lounger with a parasol, loads of suncream and in and out of the sea.

We also went on a few boat trips so it was a lot cooler.

taxquestiontime · 08/02/2025 10:41

We were in Corfu and Paxos last August and it was fantastic beach weather. Definitely not too hot and it even rained on a couple of days. It was was a wonderful!
