Near water (lake or sea), hills or mountains, forests. Walks that you can do directly from where you’re staying.

Fairly secluded but able to walk to a pub or restaurant that serves good food.

Bonus points for a porch/seating area overlooking the water and a fire or log burner.

UK if possible but also interested in anywhere in the world for future options.

Thank you in advance

Luxembourg ticks all those boxes. Holiday Park Kohnenhof | Nature experience | EuroParcs is on a river, with lakes nearby, but there are lots of other holiday parks that are directly on lakes.

Thank you. If it’s a holiday park are you surrounded by other lodgings? I found a lovely looking one in the Lake District but unfortunately it was too much of a complex when I actually stayed there.

I don't know of any specific accommodation, but as a country Slovenia might suit you. Or the Baltic countries?

There are other lodgings about (the video on the website shows the layout pretty well), but because it's not like centreparks in that they are basically a base to explore the mountains and forests and local towns etc rather than purely stay on site it doesn't feel like a resort. You could also look at airbnbs in the Eisenbach/ Mullerthal valley region if you wanted to be entirely alone.

Thank you, do you recommend any particular areas?

zell am See or Saalbach are two well established areas with lots to do in the summer

In the UK I love Scotland, stayed in some lovely cottages in Beauly and around Loch Ness.

The Langdale Hotel in the Lake District. It has SC cottages too: https://www.langdale.co.uk/

Altausee, Austria. Lots of gorgeous little cabins overlooking the lake. Incredible walks. About 2 hrs drive from Salzburg. Once there you wouldn't need the car

The Boat houses at Ullswater in the Lake District.

Glorious lake views, walks at the lake, lovely small village on your doorstep at Pooley Bridge with more walks to explore. Within easy reach of the other North Lakes.

Trefin in Pembrokeshire is a small place within walking distance of the beautiful Pembrokeshire coastal path.

Northumberland ticks those boxes.
But .. so many places abroad too. France , northern Spain etc

SophiaBrown · 07/02/2025 01:53

I think Norway and New Zealand are both great. As for the UK, the Lake District is a good fit.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 07/02/2025 19:22

Would you do a river instead of sea/lake? If so, what about the Wye Valley? Very beautiful area. We stayed in a cottage overlooking the river at Symonds Yat (where Sex Education was filmed, if you watched it. We could see Otis's house from our bedroom window). Lovely pubs within 10 mins walk along the river. Great walks. Canoeing on the river. Cycling in the forest. Peregrine falcons. The garden literally was on the river bank.

We went Mon-Fri in early April and found the old cottage quite cold, the particular one we stayed in could have done with better heating as river valleys are quite cold and damp that time of year. But I bet it's beautiful in summer. The whole area is just gorgeous and I'd definitely go back.

We used Wye Valley Holiday Cottages.

The lake district feels like the obvious choice here. Maybe around Windermere, but lots of places would suit.

OP look at boutique retreats, I've used plenty of their properties and you can search by the exact criteria you want
