Holiday essentials for 9 month old?

Oatmilktea · 04/02/2025 13:06

We are going on holiday to Tenerife in 6 weeks time with our 8 month old. Please tell me all of your travel essentials for babies!

We plan on bringing a compact stroller and will put it in the hold (stroller suggestions welcome also!) and will pop him in the baby carrier on the flight/until we get the stroller back. He is BF so will hopefully feed him on take off and landing.

I’d love suggestions for toys to keep him entertained on the flight, toys for round the pool/in the room, what to dress him in during the day when he’s not in the pool, whether it’s worth bringing something (inflatable paddling pool for example?) to safely contain him round the pool.

Thank you!

If you're planning on going to the beach a beach tent and small paddling pool. Buy them when you get there. They are very portable at that age.

Lovebirdslovetea · 04/02/2025 13:08

well what about popping ears on the flight. Don’t bother with many toys on the flight, you want him asleep for it so get him some sleep medicine. He might get disturbed by the unfamiliarity

Sleep medicine? For an 8 month old? You can’t be serious?!

Bring cool airy items that cover his arms so he doesn’t get sunburned, bring a hat, bring an abundance of Sun cream and after sun or buy it when you’re there

Well I don’t know if it exists for 8 months old but there might be something to get him to sleep for the flight. Unless you want him screaming the plane down for hours

Thank you, we won’t be going to the beach. Will mostly be at the pool and exploring the nearby resort

He’s a perfectly happy and content baby so definitely doesn’t need sleep medicine! He’s never screamed for hours on end so I’m quite confident he won’t scream the plane down!

Has he ever been on a plane before

Yes but a quick domestic flight. I have no concerns about how he will be on the flight. I’m looking for suggestions on what to bring with me!

🤣

My DD has been regularly flying since she was 6 months old (thanks to my parents who live abroad) and she nor any other baby I've seen on a flight have never screamed for the entire flight. There may be crying and take off and landing (though dd never has) but then they settle pretty quickly.

Feed or dummy for the ear popping and they cope much better than I do!

i remember getting my daughter something like this ,its a bigger inflatable seat. Lasts till they are about 2 you need to keep hold of it when they are small or they fall out. But its nice not having to hold them all the time in the pool

I find a full on sun suit is better than attempting full coverage with sun cream. Don't forget a hat and some bath type toys to play with in the water. A teapot and cups go down very well!

I'm way more comfortable holding dd in the water rather than an inflatable and a beach tent helps if you won't be under a brolly yourself!

A snooze shade for the pram in the evenings to help sleep when you go out for dinner. Maybe with a white noise machine underneath.

Oatmilktea · 04/02/2025 13:51

Thanks for your suggestions, all noted!

We've been traveling for half a year with our 8 months old baby and my one suggestion is take as little as possible. First of all - you don't need much your baby is going to be loving the adventure anyway and also it makes life so easy if you travel light with a baby.
A suggestion for a light stroller that you can even take with you on the plain -

Thank you, good advice. That’s the stroller of my dreams however a bit too pricey!

the yoyo pram. You can then take it on board and in overhead as baby hand luggage. So no worries about waiting for pram

you won’t need all these sun suit options surely? If you’re going in 6 weeks time it will be March. March is early spring and won’t be very hot at all. Google says 15-22 average. So whilst it might be lovely and sunny for a walk, you won’t be swimming in an outdoor pool with an 8 month old unless it’s a heated jacuzzi. So take layers, it’s will be colder at night so blankets etc and coat if you plan on walking with baby in evenings

Thanks, the yoyo is too expensive unfortunately. We went at the same time last year and it was 24-26 degrees every day and the pools are heated. We have fleece lined swimsuits if it’s too cold and he would only spend 15 mins here and there in the pool anyway. There’s an indoor pool too if it’s too chilly.

Good tip re layers and blankets, thanks

Snooze shade for the pram when DD was 4 months in Portugal and again when she was 11 months in Spain was a life saver!

UV protection sun hats that tie under the chin so DD couldn't pull it off also was a life saver.

Milton tablets to sterilise.

Something to chew/suck on for take off and landing whether that's a feed, teething toy or dummy.

Full arms and legs UV swimwear.

Pram fan.

Small pool/bath toys like little rubber ducks/fishes etc my DD loved whilst playing in the pool. Baby float also.

Make sure you have a separate GHIC for every member of the family, including the baby. See here. Check out the location of the nearest public health centre to your accommodation on Google Maps, or this map from the local healthcare system, before you travel. In an emergency, call 061 for an ambulance, or the general emergency number, 112. If you ask your hotel reception they will very often send you a private ambulance (€500+, which may not always be covered by your travel insurance) that will take you to a private clinic, because they get kickbacks commission.

You can get all of the major nappy brands in Spain, but Pampers are called Dodot for obscure historical reasons. If you use a particular brand of food or formula then do some research to find the nearest equivalent as the brands there are mostly different even if the formulation is similar.
