Food choices in Orlando and the parks

We’re planning our first trip to Orlando with our children, for two weeks and visiting several of the big parks. I have food intolerances, as does my son. I can’t eat fried or high fat foods, they make me really ill. I can’t eat bread as I’m allergic to yeast. I’m very intolerant of histamine in food and so have to avoid or limit certain foods (it’s an accumulative intolerance). I don’t like sugary foods or puddings. Three of us are lactose intolerant. I know this all sounds impossible but in the UK/Europe I can usually find something to eat though I prefer to always take a villa so we can home prepare foods and I can recover with foods I can eat if a restaurant meal makes me ill.

Do you think I’ll be able to find foods I / we can eat in the parks and local restaurants or is it all hot dogs, pizza, burgers, fried food, donuts etc? Will I need to take food in with me, and is this allowed? We stayed in Disneyland Paris years ago and I couldn't find anything I could eat, even though we were staying in the hotel with the ‘best’ restaurant. I did manage to find a Macdonalds salad in the park, which was a small bowl of iceberg lettuce. If I get too hungry, out of desperation I may eat something I can’t and end up being ill for three days!

is it easy to buy fresh fruit and veg there? Do some of the restaurants have good salads and ‘healthy’ options? Needless to say my kids and husband will happily eat burgers and pizza every day!

They're fab with allergies / intolerances in my experience. Food being taken into the park does have rules around it (and I think some of them just changed for universal) so best check the websites. I've seen others with allergies take food in if needed, although bear in mind the weather.

If you're doing parks - download the Disney / Universal apps now, you can see the menus for the restaurants/dining locations now and plan what you want to eat! You can normally find allergy friendly information on here too.

There's definitely fried and "classic" American food in the parks, but there's so much good food too. Fresh dishes, fruits, salads, really lovely bits. What sort of foods do you normally eat out?

Universal a couple of summers ago was great with allergies. I'd probably run with taking snacks in for the day but dinner the restaurants were great.

The smaller places dotted in the park were mainly pizza, burgers etc but Citywalk where the main restaurants are was excellent.

Thanks for the details FestiveMouse. I eat salads with lots of things in, nuts, seeds, avocado, figs etc, rice salads, couscous salads, or soups, then for dinner perhaps steamed vegetables and marinated chicken or fish, red meat once or twice a week, the odd Indian curry (home made to reduce oil content), stir-fry or Thai food, I love good sushi if I can get it. Everything homemade except the sushi so I can work around my and the children's food intolerances.

jeaux90 that's good to hear! I'll aim to take lunch in after checking the various websites, the kids and DH can have burgers etc for lunch and we'll aim for CityWalk for dinner. You've been very helpful!

If you're hiring a car go to Walmart and stock up, we made packed lunches every day

Disney details here. We don't have any dietary restrictions but the servers are very good at asking if anyone does.

There are some good quick serve and sit-down options particularly at Disney Springs. Polite Pig, Earl of Sandwich, Blaze Pizza.

And the food is generally better in the resort hotels than in the parks.
