What would you estimate in £ or € for two adults and a young child due general sightseeing and food. We have booked room only at the hotel in Athens.

I would say €200-€300 per day in Athens, depending on what you want to see/do.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 01/02/2025 18:31

How long is apiece of string. What do you want to do / see, how do you want to eat?

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 01/02/2025 18:31

Depends massively on what you plan to do and eat.

if you are pastry and coffee for breakfast, sandwich for lunch and cheap eats for dinner then not a huge amount. If you are eating 3 big meals a day, doing tourist stuff, having afternoon drinks and a bottle of wine each day then it will be a huge amount more.

I think 200-300€ is average?

Eldermillenialyogi · 01/02/2025 23:54

I think we would want fairly basic meals

€200-300 a day is more than I had in mind

More like €100 day excluding accommodation cosdd
but perhaps that is unrealistic

You can do cheap or posh. Budget €1 for every £1 that you would spend on equivalent levels of service/food/entertainment in the UK and you won't go far wrong.

SlipperyLizard · 02/02/2025 00:52

Are you trying to budget, or trying to work out how much cash to take? If the latter, don’t bother, just use a card (but make sure you have an account that doesn’t charge extra!).

TeamGeriatric · 02/02/2025 06:29

A quick Google suggest admission to acropolis is €20 per adult. Other sights are likely to be cheaper, particularly on the islands. Feeding 3 people for €100/day might be a challenge, although it's ages since I went to Greece. In Athens there are probably cheaper eating options than on the islands.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 02/02/2025 07:33

€100 a day is unrealistic.

That’s the thing, it totally depends on where you plan on eating etc? I’m sure 100 euro would be possible if you’re going to get lunch from local supermarket, get food from food markets, or budget friendly places. If you are planning to eat out a lot, then I’d think closer to 200 is more realistic.

UbiquitousObjects · 02/02/2025 07:46

I think €100 a day is far too low for everything.

To be on the safe side, I think I'd budget €125 a day for food and drink (assuming no fine dining) and then any excursions/entry price/travel on top - which could be from €0 to €€€€ depending on what you're planning.

GingerKombucha · 02/02/2025 07:50

Athens can be pretty cheap, couple of coffees and pastries for breakfast could be 10 euros, souvlaki for three in a non-touristy place even with a wine or beer each will be 20-30 euros. You could easily make 100 euros a day work, maybe a bit more the day you go to see the acropolis (though it's worth googling to see if you're visiting over the days it's free). If you go to the student district there are little meze bars with very cheap food and drinks and it's often excellent, you can eat and drink well for 3 for again 20-30 euros.

2024theplot · 02/02/2025 08:05

Sadly I think €100 a day is unrealistic, Greece isn't as cheap as it used to be, and it's gone up in price in the last couple of years in particular.
If you have an apartment style room you could make food cheaper by doing a supermarket shop for breakfast in the hotel room, and make up lunch /snacks /drinks to take with you for the day.
Most restaurants have menus with prices outside so just make sure you check before sitting down in a restaurant.
I tend to book a hotel with breakfast in Greece, and still spend about €60 per day on lunch, bottled water, soft drinks, and dinner just for me. I'm not going to fine dining restaurants, but I'm also not treking across town to find the cheapest places to eat.
Excursions are quite easy to budget for, Google has the prices for most things. Excursions are a lot cheaper when not booked via your holiday company.

UbiquitousObjects · 02/02/2025 08:06

I think 'only' planning to budget eat/drink is risky.

It looks fine on paper and there may well be dinners you can get for €15 a head in many places. But then there's that time when you get lost or walk too far or xyz happens and distracts you and suddenly it's 5pm, you're all starving and boiling and knackered and the only restaurant with space within 20 minutes is €50 a head and you just can't face looking for somewhere else.

Crap like that has happened to us on UK weekends and we've ended up paying well over the odds for a meal, never mind being abroad 😂

samlovesdilys · 02/02/2025 08:30

We ate breakfast in hotel, stopped for coffee etc during the day, tgeee are lies if sandwich/pastry shop places so we bought good there for lunch mainly and then went out for dinner (best value was up in the uni district, not in the centre or plaka, ratify though both were). Travelled by metro or walked and visited several museums. Main costs were food walking tour and entrance to acropolis museum but both amazing. Probably spent c€150 a day?

Eldermillenialyogi · 02/02/2025 08:42

Yeah it's more than I want to know how much to take rather than it's a budget but Jan and Feb have been expensive so I'd like to not spend £1000 on a five day trip. At the same time I'd like to enjoy the holiday as it's only five days and we don't go abroad often! Someone who's been recently said food is cheap. We were thinking we'd probably have two meals a day anyway if we have a late breakfast / brunch and then early dinner (due to young DC) but I guess it costs what it costs. We were going to try to just take cash as I know some cards / banks charge to use then abroad and DH hadn't sorted anything (his one job) but I've confirmed my Barclaycard doesn't charge so I think we'll take about €500 and then we will have our cards anyway.

Perhaps I should let you know when we get back how much we spent!
