Travel Insurance Help What to disclose

Georgieporgie29 · 29/01/2025 11:20

We booked a holiday yesterday for later on this year and I went on to buy our holiday insurance last night as we always do when we book. I have a few medical issues so know how to declare them. My family do not. Now my DH is potentially having a cosmetic procedure in a couple of months and I don’t know how to declare this as he doesn’t have a diagnosis and it is just for aesthetic purposes.

What would you do in this situation?

Declare it as a medical issue (think tummy tuck kind of surgery) but I can’t see anywhere to say he will be having surgery.

Get travel insurance for the other 3 of us and get his separate after his surgery where I can declare he has had surgery in the last 12 months?

I want to make sure we have the correct cover. Thanks for any help.

I think you'll be better off talking to an insurance company. I've looked at medical insurance companies and whilst some do ask about surgery, of major surgery in the last few years. I've never disclosed my cataract surgery as it was minor and I'm fully healed.

As you're probably aware if you don't disclose an issue your insurance can be void. However if you disclose something that you don't need to they my use it to up the price 😮

Also be aware of medical insurance comparison sites as they can give unreasonably low prices. I was quoted £700 for our holiday on the comparison site but when I gave the company the identical info it was over £900

Word to the wise don't go to the America's with medical issues, even if they are under control.

Declare any medical issues (including obesity if any of you have a BMI>30).

If the cosmetic procedure isn't for a diagnosis then you probably don't have to, but I'd talk to a broker to be sure.

Ducksurprise · 29/01/2025 11:52

Of course you have to declare it- having surgery planned must greatly increase the chance of you cancelling the holiday.

You need to ring up and talk to a provider, but I think it will be expensive.

Thanks for all the responses. Do you think it would be worth waiting until after the surgery to get insurance? The op will probably be May and we don’t go away until October. I am definitely going to declare it, that wasn’t my question, it was how because it doesn’t ask for upcoming surgeries only surgeries that you have had in the last 12 months. And as the first response has noted they will probably ramp the costs up when in reality it should have zero affect after the op has happened.

It is not America btw so at least there’s that.

I am just debating getting mine and the children’s now and then his after the op. Can you get separate insurance for the same trip?

I have chronic conditions which I always disclose and have done on the quotes I received yesterday.

His surgery is purely cosmetic and none of us have a bmi over 30. He just doesn’t like the way he looks and wants to get this certain aspect fixed. He is paying privately in the UK so he wouldn’t be going abroad for surgery.

If you get insurance now for you all then add DH’s surgery/status later, you will be charged for adding this to the policy and probably get charged a further amount for revising policy details. I did this once and got charged a further £50 plus £25, just for advising them that I had an abscess treated.

caringcarer · 29/01/2025 13:31

It will be much easier to wait until after DH has had op then wait month then do it.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 29/01/2025 14:05

I would talk to the travel insurance company and see what they advise particularly as he has not undergone any surgery as yet.

But if there are any issues, any reasons why the holiday can't then go ahead they won't be covered.

The whole point of getting holiday insurance from the moment you book the holiday is to cover you for any unexpected issues between booking and travelling.
Having surgery increases the risk of issues.

If you can afford to lose the deposit on the off chance you had for cancel before his op then this is what I would do (assuming balance not paid until after op) and get the insurance after ... sometimes being in a "waiting list" kind of position means an unknown risk situation occurs and it makes the cost higher.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 29/01/2025 14:18

We did this at the start of last year ... we had a holiday booked for the summer and I wanted to sort insurance ... called a company I've used before as I have pre existing conditions however I told them DD 15 was on a waiting list for a brace for after an impacted molar was removed. Flat out they wouldn't insure her as she was on a waiting list.

So we bided our time and took the change that if anything else meant we had to cancel we'd only lose £180 ok deposits as her extraction and fitting date was before the final deposit time.

When I called back and declared it I was told as it was fitted now it didn't affect the premium

Georgieporgie29 · 29/01/2025 15:30

Yes, we have only paid the deposit for the holiday up to now and the balance will be due after his op. I was going to pay a bit off each month but I will just keep that money and pay it off after his op when I get the insurance.

Would it be worth getting mine and the kids now and then we would be covered to get our deposits back if anything happens to us and then get his separately? Or can you not split insurance like that on a group holiday?

Also, thanks for everyone’s advice I really appreciate it.

Yes, you can get your insurance now and then DH later, we’ve done it instead of getting a family policy, my FIL was awaiting heart surgery so I couldn’t get insurance for him, but got his own (very expensive) insurance after.

Georgieporgie29 · 29/01/2025 15:51

@Mindymomo perfect, thank you. I think I’ll do that and then at least 3 of us are covered.

I've always found it's cheaper to get a family policy.

I had taken out insurance for a year and then needed wisdom tooth removing. I phoned them up and as I wasn't actually having any problems with the tooth they said I couldn't declare it until after I'd had it done.
Funnily enough after I'd had it removed I phoned up and it's down as wisdom tooth problems which I done have but it's covered. Sounds similar to your situation

Georgieporgie29 · 30/01/2025 07:24

@Musicaltheatremum yes it does thank you. I can’t seem to be able to declare it now but worried that if I buy insurance and ring them up to add it on later then the price will go up really high. I’m hanging on at the moment as we’ve only paid the deposits I think.
