I’ve been told to avoid Rome this year as it’s a catholic jubilee celebration and it’ll be packed.

I’ve already booked 5 days in kate summer. Is it a bad idea to go there this year?

Do you mean August? The Italians will be at the sea. I would definitely avoid Easter

I'm going next week and we'll be between jubilee events. It will be worth checking the jubilee calendar to check events. Most locals decamp in August, (and annoy people on beaches in Greece)

Oh, so is very end of Aug a good time to go then? 😝

We went end of August time in 2017 not during any celebrations or anything in particular, so I can't comment on that part but it was very hot. We did all the usual tourist things and they were all very good but the only thing I found unbearable and very cramped was the Vatican. All crammed like sardines.
All the places considered holy you are to cover your shoulders and knees. So bear that in mind with the heat, you can wear a shawl or cotton trousers etc/top that covers shoulders to get around that, however you won't be allowed in if you don't cover up.
It is school holidays so maybe it's busier I don't know.
P.S bone chapel is a must, as is the colosseum.

I live in Rome and personally I wouldn’t be put off by the jubilee crowds - there’s always going to be crowds in summer, jubilee or not. Late August will still be very hot so bear that in mind.

Ok thx

I’m going with a friend in March. We didn’t know it’s a jubilee year when we booked.

I’m extremely jealous @jotex .

Enjoy! Like I said, no need to worry about the jubilee year and especially not in March. It shouldn’t take away from your experience at all but there is sooo much work going on around the city for the jubilee.

OP, the general rule with Rome is to book the major sites at least 4 weeks in advance. In fact, I'd probably do it 3 months in advance this year. We're talking Colosseum & Forum, Vatican Museum and Galleria Borghese particularly.

Wherehas2023gone · 30/01/2025 06:48

We’re going to Rome next month. Colosseum tickets are now only released 28 days before on the official website. You will need to book on the day released to get attic or underground levels (and the morning slots go very quickly)
