Gone off holidays

I feel lucky to have been able to go abroad over the years and I've been to some lovely places but now I just feel I want to stay at home.

I find travelling quite stressful now and even going on holiday in the UK I can't be bothered to pack a suitcase travelled to the destination stay somewhere that's not your own home. For the record I do not suffer from anxiety but I just prefer to stay at home. Does anybody else feel like this

I do sometimes. Plus we have cats and while the woman who feeds them while we're away is lovely and very reliable, I always worry that there's going to be an issue, such as they get sick, something happens to her, the weather stops her from coming or they behave badly for her etc etc.

But I'm quite good at having 'holidays at/from home' so I've vowed to do more of that as I get quite a lot of annual leave. It's just DP and I and he works away quite a lot in the summer but we do tend to have a short break away - usually Monday to Friday but I also take a couple of separate weeks off to do my own thing for a few days.

I keep ideas of things that are within up to about an hour's travel from where we live so in a week 'on holiday' I might spend a day at a spa, a day at the coast, go on some walks and a nice lunch out, if the weather is nice spend time just sitting in the garden, that sort of thing.

But the main point is that I am 'on holiday' so am not at work and I do as little as possible of the mundane day to day stuff, eg I won't do any time consuming cooking and might get nice treaty ready made food.

Oblomov25 · 28/01/2025 04:50

I want to go. But am shocked at the huge price increases since Covid. Wanted to take advantage of ds2 finishing GCSE's early, so go on a Europe all-inclusive in school time. Found the search frustrating and not enjoyable. Whereas all other holiday searches I've always enjoyed. It's taken the fun out of searching. That made me sad. Still haven't found anything after searching for weeks.

reluctantbrit · 28/01/2025 07:49

I love going away. DD will be at uni from September and we already have a list of places to go to she is not interested in.

One main reason is that a stay at home is just not as relaxing, it feels I wasted my annual leave. I spend too much time doing chores, watching mindless TV and surfing the internet. Too frustrating.

Days out are expensive and tiring, even living in London and just hopping on a train to a free museum.

Also, there is far too much out there to see and explore to restrict myself to home.

AyrnotAir · 28/01/2025 07:54

I'm a HUGE holiday lover. Last year we were abroad four times. Usually I spend January researching holidays trying to find good deals and booking for the year ahead. I literally get through the mundane weeks at work looking forward to my next holiday.

This year I've just had absolutely no desire to and just can't be bothered at all. The costs seem to have really also shot up massively. I think I may just have a year at home, though I do feel sorry for the kids if we don't go away.

timetodecide2345 · 28/01/2025 07:57

No im totally with you. I'm 58, DH 56. We haven't booked a holiday for August and decided we just want to do the garden. We went to San Francisco last year and the airports, flights and time difference nearly killed us. It took weeks to readjust, cost a fortune and quite frankly put us off! We have elderly dogs we need a sitter for and we don't like leaving too. One day I might get the sense of adventure back that Manchester and Heathrow killed off!

Munkypuppy · 28/01/2025 07:58

Same. Travel for a week like that is just pure stress for me.

MermaidMummy06 · 28/01/2025 07:59

I find it a huge bother now, and I used to love the booking, researching etc for travel!

I still go because I know once there I'll enjoy it. I'm out of my usual routine & no one is demanding my time. Plus at home DH will sleep until midday then sit on the couch for the rest of the day watching concerts on YouTube, while I do chores & deep cleaning & try to get him moving. On holidays he's motivated!

Pumpkincozynights · 28/01/2025 08:03

Yes I get it.
Do what’s right for you.
I feel like this about camping and self catering. I will only go self catering if it’s far too expensive to book breakfast or half board and it’s a place which holds lots of interest for me.I am not prepared to cook and clean on Holliday and neither is dh.
As for camping, I really really don’t see the point. I’d rather sit in my own garden than sleep outside with other randomers. I get it’s cheap but it’s not for me.

Pumpkincozynights · 28/01/2025 08:07

Years ago I worked in the travel industry and things seamed far more relaxed, simple and stress free. Now I find even booking a train exhausting. Wildly varying prices with strict terms and conditions. Years ago you could just rock up to the station and buy your ticket there and then without getting ripped off. Now I feel you have to book well in advance only travel at certain times and even then the 9:50 to King’s Cross on Monday 1st Feb will not cost the same fare as the 9:50 to King’s Cross on Monday 8th Feb for example. It’s exhausting.

Needspaceforlego · 28/01/2025 09:05

Op i get it. It's so expensive too. Even a budget deal is never that cheap. And ever with 4 star I'm never 100% convinced on the accommodation.

Lots of hotels don't have enough pool space for the numbers of people.

I'll fess up my favourite holiday is our ski trip. A low cost resort, We know exactly what we need. No maybe we should take....

We know exactly what we are doing. No should we visits x attraction or y attraction Not worries about getting burnt, or kids wearing UB tops.

And bonus the kids don't seem to bicker the way they do on other holidays. Bliss!

Everythingisnumbersnow · 28/01/2025 09:06

I feel the world in general is a more hostile place than it was ten years ago and I increasingly dislike the feeling of being "foreign". I think it makes you a target for people's dissatisfaction and stress.

jeaux90 · 29/01/2025 06:47

Nope. I love travelling as do our teens. But some people take more joy out of smaller pleasures and keeping their worlds small.

Don't get me wrong I love my garden and enjoy a pint down my local but we love to travel and will do more once retirement hits.

I embrace the flights as part of my chill time, how often do you get to sit for several hours and read a book or watch movies

TheAirfryerQueen · 29/01/2025 06:57

I'm now a single person and finding even a city break too expensive.

Most holidays now include a very uncomfortable budget airline which I hate. I also loathe airports.

I am looking at touring by train now, and going on more walking and hiking holidays, because the beach holiday for me is quite boring unless there's lots to see nearby. I never go FB or AI because I am always out seeing something. Beaches are horrid things anyway. I can never get rid of the sand completely.

I wanted to go to the Cairngorms by train and there's a firm that can organise it for you. Seven nights including train fares & accommodation was £943 per adult in July (before the schools break up). That's so expensive.

PerkyOchrePeer · 30/01/2025 13:16

Where's holidays even if you are tired you feel obliged to do things and go places because you have paid out for the holiday but if you're at home you can just relax and do nothing

OP posts:
Abracadabra12345 · 30/01/2025 13:25

I'm retired so can relax and do nothing whenever I want which is why I love to explore (usually around the UK by train). However if I was out at work and trying to squeeze in housework and all the rest, I'd probably value chilling at home

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 30/01/2025 23:16

No. Definitely don't feel like that! But as the poster above says, I am retired so I imagine my life is pretty relaxed compared to most people's and holidays get me out and about doing stuff. Plus we don't go abroad during the main summer school holidays so airports are a lot quieter. We always stay in nice self catering accommodation so we have plenty of space to relax and eat out once a day anyway, and without young children there's no mess to clean up.

I don't travel long haul, camp, or stay in a hotel room for more than a few days, and my favourite thing is to get away for a couple of weeks in the winter.

reluctantbrit · 31/01/2025 07:32

I must admit, some comments from people when the topic is "holiday is so stressful" or similar actually makes me wonder.

There are posters who deep clean the whole house, change the bedding before departing, have to organise everything themselves and pack for the whole family and dreading the washing/clear up when coming home.

Reading this causes me to wonder if not the stress is homemade and has actually nothing to do with going on holiday but with the time before and afterwards.

I don't clean extra, the house gets a weekly clean and it will be slightly dusty after 2 weeks anyway.
Bedding - again, it will not having the "fresh bedding smell" anymore, so sorry, nope, not doing it.
I expect the whole family to help organising and packing. And also unpack/tidy away when we are back.

I have breakfast for the next morning in the freezer and grab a pint of milk at the airport. Then it's either sending DH to the shops or a food delivery is scheduled.

RunningJo · 31/01/2025 07:42

I always enjoyed a beach holiday, now I prefer weekends away in the countryside, or city breaks abroad
Lying by the pool no longer holds much appeal. I enjoy warm weather just not really hot.
My husband would go abroad every chance he got and lie by a pool, but my days for this have passed and I’m just utterly bored after a couple of days.

Clearinguptheclutter · 31/01/2025 07:46

My mother is like that. Won’t go anywhere almost ever. A real shame I think.

that said I’m not anywhere near as keen on travel as I once was. It’s all very stressful, most of all deciding where to go I find!
however I do love a change of scenery and ideally some sun and sea (or other nice views) does a world of good. We’ve been lucky weather wise with UK holidays last few years so don’t necessarily feel the need to go a long way. We do go to Europe, not been long haul for a long time and don’t feel I really need to

Could have written that! I used to organise other people’s holidays for a living. Now I do organise my own but find it really stressful and unreliable. Been sort of “stranded”
abroad with a canceled return flight twice. Sorted ourselves out but only because we had a credit card with a sky high limit.

That's not really what camping is about.

We call this "cleaning the house for the burglars" in our family Grin. I love coming home to a lovely clean house with fresh bedding etc but rarely have the time to actually do it before we leave so come home to a bombsite 😂

SnowdropPancake · 31/01/2025 08:02

It's the cost - it's too much for me, for what you get.

Even a week away in the UK is often £1000 or more for me. I just don't want to pay that much for so little in return.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 31/01/2025 08:10

I'm with you OP...
I have been on lovely holidays in the past but found lately that I just can't be asked.

I put it down to the fact that DC are teenagers and they will/ won't do certain things. DH has slightly different ideas to what a holiday entails, but can't be asked to sort something out by himself.

So this year is the first time I am not booking a family holiday, I just see what they do... I actually couldn't care less if I go or not. In fact not having the stress of going way is liberating!

PerkyOchrePeer · 31/01/2025 08:12

Why so much for a week in uk
