Where to go for a city break with 14&6 yr old?

Can anyone recommend a city to look at for a short break in February? DH and I, and two DC- 14 & 6.

We do do adventurous, but I want this one to be as easy as possible!

3-4 nights. Direct flight from London airports, ideally Stansted but any will do. Short and easy transfer from the airport to the city. Easy to get around. Enough to keep the 6 year old's interest but also a nice place to be for the rest of us. We just want to enjoy exploring somewhere new for a few days while keeping it as chilled as possible!

Has anyone been anywhere that ticks these boxes?

Thanks!

Barcelona. I have some happy memories of exploring the Park Guell and eating warm churros dipped in chocolate with my dc! There's actually enough to do to keep you busy for a week.

Amsterdam or Bruges (short train ride from Brussels airport) … so safe to cycle around and canals are stunning

Peclet · 20/01/2025 14:46

Amsterdam!

Great museums and loads to do. Fantastic shopping, bike rides, boast rides. Really very walkable and very safe.

Ah, thank you both. Barcelona was my immediate thought, but the juggle of ages and needs is a bit tricky and was hoping for someone's real life experience. I hadn't thought of Bruges, I'll have a look thank you.

Rome?

Wildehorses · 20/01/2025 14:56

Kids can do waffle making and/or chocolate workshops in Bruges too … beautiful place

MissAmbrosia · 20/01/2025 14:56

Barcelona over Bruges any day especially for a 6 year old. There's loads to see and even the Gaudi architecture is wacky enough to appeal. Zoo, aquarium, funfair on Mt Tibidabo, cable car over the harbour. Nice shops for the older one.

We had 3 nights in Rome a couple of years ago, when our kids were 8, 12 and 15. We ALL loved every moment. It was fun, easy, not too expensive and the perfect amount of time. Plus the food suited us all which is a big part!

We are doing Rome at half term although my kids are aged 14-18 now. planning to do colosseum etc and also get the train down to pompeii

We did Paris when they were younger - lots to do and see- eiffel tower etc plus a really good kids park. DS2 was about 5 and he just loved the metro etc and we did a boat ride which was a chilled way to see some of the sights.

HairyLairyQuiteContrary · 20/01/2025 16:05

Thanks I'll have a look at Rome too, I've always wanted to go but haven't got round to it.
We've been to Paris a good few times, although admittedly DC2 won't remember, so I thought it would be nice to get somewhere new or at least less familiar this time.

Berlin. We all loved Berlin. Youngest was 8 at the time and loved the tv tower and this weird mini amusement park thing about the Trabant car. Berlin had an excellent range of souvenir gift shops. We all love a cheesy gift shop.
And the other tower you can climb up, the Victory Tower? Victory Monument?

There were some war exhibits we didn't take him to but our older teenagers found those interesting

I was about to say Barcelona! So much there for all ages- I took mine aged 8 and 6 and they absolutely loved all the Gaudi stuff. There’s also a zoo, the open bus tour, a beach… it’s great! I would avoid hotels close the the Ramblas or the Gothic quarter as they tend to be noisy at night. Eixample is a nice quiet neighbourhood and easy distance to everything.

MrsAvocet · 20/01/2025 16:12

Berlin.
It's a fascinating city with a lot to see and very good public transport. I've only been with teens but I would think there's enough to be of interest for a younger child even I they don't really understand the history. Nice parks and a big zoo too.

Overthemoun · 20/01/2025 16:13

Valencia

soupmaker · 20/01/2025 16:22

Another vote for Berlin, and for Valencia. Both brilliant cities for teens and younger kids. We did Berlin with a 3 year old in tow, Valencia with an 11 year old and 6 year old.

lifeturnsonadime · 20/01/2025 16:32

Copenhagen ticks all of your boxes.

WineseCuisine · 20/01/2025 17:08

Lisbon is nice in February and has plenty to keep kids entertained. Marrakech - a slightly longer flight but still doable.

Or how about Reykjavik? Northern lights and bathing in a hot spring with snow all around is usually a winner.

Barcelona.
Amazing parks zoo sea life centre, cute fairy bar just off the ramblas fun for little and big kids
