Scandinavia Holiday - Itinerary Advice

Planning a Scandinavia trip - definitely Sweden and Norway, maybe Denmark too. Can’t decide whether to drive from UK or if it’s too much driving and stopping before we get to Scandinavia. Car rental is very expensive from a quick search. Don’t know if trains are an option? We’d like to go to a couple of the major cities and visit some fjords, maybe take a boat trip.

Would love any advice on itineraries and transport options. Many thanks!

Hi! I live in the mountains in Norway and used to live in Stockholm. Happy to help!

Driving would be at least 2 days each way to Sweden so you would need to factor accommodation and lot of fuel into the cost comparison. You can get quite cheap flights to Stockholm from Stansted.

Trains are definitely an option. Last summer, we did an incredibly scenic rail journey from Oslo to Bergen. We then stayed in Bergen for nearly a week, using it as a base for some day trips out to Fjords.

what were the best fjord trips from bergen? sorry to hijack, but sounds like there are some people who really know norway. I will be in Alesund for a few days and the. flying to Bergen for 3 nights. i don’t think k we can do norway in a nutshell and i am not sure what to do from bergen to see the best fjords in that time. Advice?

It's a long drive but it's do-able. You have to factor in the cost of fuel and bridges/ferries and the fact that it takes a whole day and night!

There are lots of options, some of the options are:
Ferry Germany to Sweden
Ferry Germany to Denmark then ferry or bridge to Sweden
Bridges from Denmark to Sweden
Ferry Denmark to Norway

I've done the ferry from Puttgarden to Rodby then Helsingor to Helsingborg. I've also done the bridges Storebealt and Oresund and once we took the Hydrofoil from west of Copenhagen to Aarhus as it was the same price as the bridge and it looked fun. They do a really nice soft ice on board!

But you could try Cheap Car Rentals Worldwide - VIP Cars I got a good deal with them.

Some people do Norway in a nutshell in a day! Or are you saying you can't do that one for a reason other than time?

When we were in Bergen, there were myriad fjord trips available. We had arrived by ferry from Fjarland, and had also stayed in another village in the fjords before that, so we didn't need to include fjords in our Bergen plans - but we weren't short of options to do so!

For how long are you hoping to go, and who will be going; is it you and a friend, or will you be taking DC too? What time of year?

In countries where distances are so vast, driving is both the obvious choice and at the same time potentially quite tiring. Might you be able to do a bit of both: taking the train for some longer stretches, and picking up a rental car once you reach key destinations? A car gives you the autonomy to stop off and admire surprise views (of which there are many), to spontaneously explore off the beaten track and to switch up your itinerary.

Both Norway and Sweden are known for their natural beauty and wildness -it seems a pity to not give yourselves the flexibility to explore and to get out in the sticks which a car gives you. When home, I literally can't wait to get out into the vast and awesome nature; that's what really sets Scandinavia apart. There are some lovely cities, and you could probably keep yourselves very busy city-hopping, but definitely give yourselves the gift of freedom to explore. Some driving in Norway can be quite hair-raising (Trollstigen, for instance), so be realistic about your nerve and road handling capabilities.

In Sweden at least, nature becomes more stunning the further north you travel, with a sweet spot around 2/3 up. Norway's beauty is more coastal in my opinion, although the interior is quite dramatic too.

If you are concerned about the price of a rental car, the whole thing is likely to feel quite eye-watering. I'm always shocked at prices when I go back. Have you looked into accommodation yet? Hostel accommodation is usually of a high and comfortable standard, and good value. You can get family rooms or private rooms so you don't have to share a dorm (although toilets and showers are communal as are kitchen facilities). If you book early, you can get some great deals.

Make sure you budget to be able to afford nice treats when out and about. 'Fika' is a thing, and whereas coffee refill is often 'bottomless' the traditional artisanal baked goods can be pricey. As can regular eating out.

Wishing you a lovely holiday!
