Hello

Has anyone done a summer trip to Iceland? I'd be interested in your highlights. We'll mainly be in the south.

Thank you.

Yes, went during school summer holidays. Stayed in Reykjavik and about an hour away along the south coast. Loved it! Did a lot of driving (very easy roads) but not too much that it dominated the holiday. Weather was fine but chilly, even by Scottish summer standards. I think we only had one short spell of rain. It’s expensive but like nowhere else on earth.

Yes - loved it too. The Geysers are fantastic. Swimming in the hot pools. The scenery. Loved the Golden circle and Stykkisholmur and the peninsula there. Puffins. It never got dark. Didn’t like Reykjavik itself as much. And yes - it is really expensive.

Yes.

We stayed near Thingvellir.

Went to see the original geyser, also gullfoss waterfall.

Swam in some of the lakes around thingvellir and Also poked around the area - it's the outdoor venue for the early parliament in Iceland.

We then drove north and went to bildudalar. There's a lot of bird watching up there in the right months. Also a museum of Icelandic monsters and faeries which our kids liked.

Also drove to Landmanalaugur which is the start of a 4 day hiking trail. We only did a short day hike (children were aged about 10) but plenty of interesting rocks and hot land. Landmanalaugur has natural hot springs to bathe in as well. You will need a 4 wheel drive to get up there as you need to cross a river to reach the campsite/visitor centre.
