Wedding in term time abroad

My best friend gets married in Cyprus in July 2025 a week before the school holidays start, which means I would need to take my daughter out of school for a week. What could this mean? I have looked online and seen different advice. Definate fine? Would appreciate some help!

How old is DD? What day does school break up and what day would you have to travel?

But yes, pretty sure your choices will be: pay fine; don't go to the wedding; go for a shorter period if that works; or go yourself but leave DD with a family member.

Helpful choice by your friend there!
Will DD be 5 then?
Any chance you can just do a long weekend trip?

Say no, if she's arranged it in term time and lots of guests have kids she's probably hoping lots of people will decline so it works out cheaper.

You do know OP doesn't have to go though don't you?

The government website lays out the top line information but you'll need to go on your own council website to find out when they will fine you. Typically if they miss more than 10 sessions e.g. 5 days then you will attract a fine. I would suggest you explore if it is possible to cut down the trip to avoid fines.

Definite fine measured per half day usually. You'd barely get an exception if their own parents were getting married. Your school will have it on its policies page.

Your choices

  1. take her and factor the cost of the fine into your overall costs
  2. leave her with DH, GPs, other relative
  3. don’t go

I’d just take her and pay the fine. (Although am Scottish so no fines here).

Our local doesn’t fine somit wouldn’t be a fine for us. It depends on the policy of each school.

Would you have to go for the full week?

Lilactimes · 17/01/2025 16:40

It might be nice to go to your BF wedding without daughter if that’s feasible?

…. although appreciate makes holiday time and childcare difficult if you’re taking precious holiday from work just for fun and not purely family reasons!!

How old is your DD? Does she have to go, can she stay with friends or family?

Tubetrain · 20/01/2025 08:05

Why does your daughter have to go? Pretty rubbish to miss the last week of school year. What year is she in?

DappledThings · 20/01/2025 08:11

Nowhere enough info. Where do you live? How many sessions would she miss? Do you want to take her or would it be easier to go alone?
