Canary Islands in October

GRCP · 15/01/2025 12:15

Hello, can anyone tell me - an all inclusive package holiday to one of the Canary Islands in October: does it feel a bit end of season? Or is everywhere still open?

We are a family of 4 including 2 x DC age 9 and 7. We love beaches and swimming pools but are quite active and will be bored if that is all there is to do, so wondering if there will be things to do in this location and at this time of year. Boat rides, excursions, markets, souvenir shopping, that kind of thing.

Any experiences appreciated!

I'm going this October but not been since a teen. I used to go annually in November as a teen and it was always great. Went on all the excursions and lovely weather. We are going to Feuraventura this year with my 14 and 11 year old in October.

Went to Tenerife for October half term last year, weather was beautiful and everything was open.

October can be quite hot to be honest. We are here now and it's lovely, cooler in the evening though.

The Canaries are a year-round destination. I've been at new year, Easter and in the summer and everything was open every time.

What are good day trips in Tenerife?

What are good day trips in Tenerife?

We did the dolphin/whale catamaran trip which youngest son and I loved but DH and eldest were VERY seasick (as were many others). Siam park but was so busy (August) so we actually preferred Aqualand but potentially in October would be better. Just couldn't handle how busy Siam park was. I wanted to do the mountain at night stargazing but was when the wildfires were happening so all cancelled. The Ocean was SO rough in Costa Adeje where we were and could barely go passed ankles as the waves were so huge. I love the beach and swimming in it so that is what put it down for me. Reviews I have seen on Feuraventura say the Ocean is much calmer.

@00deed1988 Costa adeje you need to go to La Pinta beach for swimming.
More family friendly. They also have an inflatable course. Good fun.

Tenerife has many excursions, boat trips, jet skis, also jungle park, loro parque, siam park and you can pay extra for vip fast pass where you don't have to queue for the slides and it's definitely worth it. You can go on the excursion up teide which is fab. Weather is always great in October.

Rocknrollstar · 15/01/2025 17:40

Be aware that although it will stay very warm it will still get dark early!

It won't get dark until 7:30/8pm

I went on a cruise in November last year to the canaries, everything was open & busy on all of the islands. Weather was great, 32 degrees most days

Canaries are year round especially in school holidays. My parents were there in December and it was warm enough for sunbathing and swimming (I'd recommend looking for somewhere with a heated pool though).

Our favourite excursion on Tenerife was mount Teide.

Also did a lovely boat trip and saw dolphins and a whale!

We've decided on Tenerife - DD is fascinated by volcanoes so that is a real pull factor!

The boat trips sound great too.

Did you book the excursion when you got there?

Autumn/winter is peak season for the Canaries so everything is open. You would be unlucky to have bad weather.

Jeezitneverends · 15/01/2025 18:42

Tenerife’s high season is over the winter so you’re going just as they go into it, so perfect timing! We were there last month and even then it’s light till about 6pm

Plenty of excursion companies here to book with and also depending on where you stay you can book all excursions with someone in your hotel

DH and I were on a cruise last Oct ( 2nd half of the month) we had three days in Tenerife/Gran Caria and Lanzarote .

It pissed down in Tenerife and Gran Canaria . We stood in the Botanical Gardens in a deluge . There was much enthusiam for the rain from the locals , they put pots and buckets out to catch it to water plants etc.

A few years ago we went to Tenerife in Half Term ( last week Oct) it was gorgeous .

Maybe I took the bad weather with me ...

Daisy03 · 15/01/2025 19:06

Depending where you are in Tenerife the dolphin kayaking tours are fantastic, these go from Los cristianos beach and over to the fish farms where dolphins can often be seen. Obviously it's good to have an ok level of fitness

reluctantbrit · 15/01/2025 20:05

We went to Lanzarote in October and had good weather - apart from one day where it was pouring down. Got quite fresh as well suddenly.

Tenerife - the south is warmer and drier than the north. Because of that, you have more lush plants and vegetation in the north.
We had a rental car in Tenerife, easy to navigate and you are more flexible. The only thing we booked as a tour was the whale/dolphin watching. DD and I were definitely queasy, so take gums and plain crackers.

cheezncrackers · 16/01/2025 15:51

Mt Teide National Park is stunning - it's like the western US - all rocky and wild looking. The cable car was closed due to high winds the day we went, so that was a bit annoying, but you don't need to do a booked excursion there if you hire a car, you can just drive up there. The road is wide and pleasant and not hairpin bends.

GRCP · 16/01/2025 17:30

I think hiring a car could be a good idea - not needing transfers might make it worthwhile booking flights and hotel separately...
