Hello:)l

Looking for recommendations for places to stay / visit in the Black Forest and zee am sell areas.

We will be driving - camper van through France - Reims and back via Luxembourg/ Belgium but don't know the area at all so would love to know if good walks / spas / campsites with pools / lakes to swim / paddle board / mountains to climb etc

Any suggestions would be most welcome

Thanks

Ferienparadies Schwarzwalder Hof is a gorgeous site. Our main focus there was unwinding and relaxing - we spent a lot of time in the spa and indoor pool rather than doing active stuff. For a more active break, there’s a brilliant site in Austria called Ferienparadies Natterer See which has an on-site lake with all kinds of water based activities.

We did a treetop walk in the Black Forest which was beautiful and the slide down was huge fun.

We also enjoyed a cable car ride. The views were amazing.

They look amazing but terrifying too

OP can I just have your itinerary once you’re done Grin

I’m joking but it really is so hard to plan these types of holidays!

knackeredmu · 14/01/2025 16:56

Of course

So far

We have :
Day 1 Home to Reims (ish) stay on a vineyard if I can find one or a B&B dog friendly hotel
Day 2 Drive to Black Forest exact location tbc
Day 3-5 Germany
Day 6 drive to Austria - Zell am See ish
Day 7-11 Chill in Austria - lake swim / mountain bike / spa visit and a trip to Salzburg for The Sound of Music experience
Day 12 drive back - probably to Strasbourg ish or into Belgium? Or back in France and stay for 2 nights
Day 14 - Sad long slog home -

Make sure you have the Park4Night app on your phone. It's really useful for listing camping spots of all types - free to park Aires in France, parking spots on the edge of forests sort of thing as well as paid campsites.

We use it a lot when travelling with the van and it's not let us down so far.

Zell am See has a number of camping sites just outside of the town.

Panorama Camp is on the opposite side of the lake to Zell, but there is a bus service into Zell or it is an easy bike ride around the lake.

Seecamp Zell am See is closer to the town (a lovely 30 minute walk by the lake) and has recently been upgraded after a major fire destroyed the entire place about 3 years ago. This would be the best site of the two. This photo was taken in September, about 100m from the Seecamp looking towards Zell am See.

There is also camping available about 5 miles outside of the town at Neubrunnen, near Maishofen. This is a small lakeside campsite that also has an on-site hotel with apartments, a restaurant etc.

For mountain biking, a tree-top walk, Europe's biggest high-ropes park and some zip-wires you can drive up the valley to Saalbach-Hinterglemm. The rope-park is at the very end of the Glemm valley, about 5 km past Hinterglemm.

An amazing site ! There's a huge swimming pool complex adjacent to the site and it's walking distance into the town.

Schauinsland cable car ride is lovely.

Lake Titisee is also nice. I think that's how you spell it 🙈

Freiberg is a nice little place if you'd like to visit a city.

Also near Freiburg is Europapark which is the most amazing theme park - way better than Alton towers.

Zell am see:

The lido in Zell, it’s got easy access for lake swimming, a small notmal pool, lovely grass for lying out on, a snack bar, rafts to swim out to in the lake. Really lovely place to spend an afternoon for water chilling.

The gorge board walk in Kaprun (and more niche interest, but if it’s your thing the hydro electric power station visitor centre, or the high lake tours).

Get a cable car up one of the mountains and go for a walk. The views are stunning and there’s plenty of family friendly walks up there.

The water / light show at the lake in the evenings (the actual show, not just the automatic short one that runs regularly through the day).

There are also lidos on the Thumersbach side of the Zell Lake - i.e. the other side of the lake to Zell am See itself and the side where the campsites are. The one at Thumersbach is lovely, and there is also a nice park next to it where you can chill on the grass under the trees.
