Esta and dual citizenship

Hello, wondering if anyone can advise or if they’ve had a similar situation.

We are flying to the US later in the year and I’m thinking of applying for my ESTA now so it’s all done.

I’m a British citizen with UK passport. I’ve applied to be placed on the Irish Foreign Births Registry as my grandparent was born in Ireland. The application for this can take up to 9 months.

If I apply now I would answer no to the dual citizen questions.

If I get approved and placed on the Irish Foreign Births Registry, prior to going to the USA, will I need to get a new ESTA? Timing wise there is a possibility I could get approved but unlikely I’d have gotten my Irish passport before we go.

On a separate note, has anyone with dual British/Irish citizenship had any issues when applying for an ESTA?

Many thanks in advance.

I have dual citizenship (not that specific mix though), and have never had an issue getting an ESTA approved. I’ve always just carefully declared it all on the form.

There is an option to edit your ESTA (address in the US for example) once it’s approved, during the 2 year validity period, but I don’t know if adding a citizenship is also allowed.

When is the trip? I wouldn’t apply for it until closer to the time - obviously not too close to risk it being rejected and a visa appointment not possible anymore, but I’d wait a bit.

Thank you. @AttilaTheMeerkat thanks for sharing, I’ve taken a look at that and think I’ll definitely need to re-apply if I do get Irish Citizenship before we go.

@RobinHood19 we go in August. I think my plan is to apply in the next month or so for me and my family. IF my circumstances change then I’ll re-apply at that point and take the hit on the cost.

No need to apply until 2-3 weeks before travel unless you're likely to be refused (eg a criminal record, visited certain countries including Cuba, heritage from certain countries)

German/British passports here. All our ESTAs are done with the British passport. I think we had to provide details of our German one but that was it.

DH moved from his German passport to using the British one with no problem.
