Pools in Gran Canaria

I have booked a holiday in Gran Canaria for mid-February. The website said the pools were heated (well heatable). However, recent reviews have said that they did not heat the pools. I'm worried I've wasted money on going somewhere with nine pools that cannot be used. It's the Lopesan Baobab resort in Meloneras.

Very rare for outdoor pools to be heated at any time. If there is an indoor one that will be

Pinkbonbon · 09/01/2025 15:46

I mean its gran canaria.. do they ever heat pools? Certainly not over winter when the tourist season is flat I shouldn't think.

It'll be like 20 degrees though so you'll be fine.
Though tbf sometimes the heat outside makes the pool feel even colder tbf.

But you just go in for a quick dip then hop out again.

I've never been away in Feb other than skiing. DD loves swimming and does spend hours in the UK sea. I wonder if they will allow wetsuits.

I don't see why not.

I'm sure if there are 9 pools, they'll be getting used. Otherwise surely they would have stopped at 3.

It will be cold.

stanleypops66 · 09/01/2025 16:04

I've been to GC and had heated pools. They still feel nippy, but you know they're heated when you try one that isn't. The beach clubs in Puerto Rico (Chester's) and amadores have proper heated pools though.

I’ve been to this resort at Easter. One pool area is well heated, the rest were not very warm even at Easter. Just about ok for my kids.

Onceuponatimethen · 09/01/2025 16:07

If we went again we would take shortie wetsuits

Snapncrackle · 09/01/2025 16:15

I’ve stayed there a few years ago in January/ Feb

Pools weren’t heated but not cold / freezing either. I think the main pool was warmish

it’s a beautiful hotel feels like your in the middle of the jungle and Indiana Jones is gonna pop out somewhere 😂

dreamingofsun · 09/01/2025 16:51

we go to lanzarote a lot and the pools are often heated in the winter, and are freezing if they arent. a lot of people are swimming in the sea, so i'm guessing thats warmer than the unheated pools.

I've been to the Canaries many times in January to April. When they say a pool is heated it's not heated much and not warm enough for me. If you are hoping for a warm pool like you would get in the Med in summer you'll be disappointed.
I was in Lanzarote last January and no-one was in the "heated" pool. I did swim in the sea, once!
The only way to get really warm pools is to get a villa with electrically heated pool, costs a lot extra, or an indoor pool.
We once took DC on holiday to tenerife in April. They were bitterly disappointed that they couldn't spend the whole day in the pool as it just wasn't warm enough. The weather is mild and you can get up to 25C but again it's not like Greece in august.
DH and I go every year now in January because I can manage without a pool and I love that bit of winter sun.

EveInEden · 09/01/2025 17:33

We went away last July and it was 45 degrees and a young woman fitted beside me so I'd decided not to go anywhere too warm in the summer. Never been to Spain or the Islands though.

We'll take wetsuits.

People who have been, what else did you do?

dreamingofsun · 09/01/2025 19:15

it was very hard to park in the resort we stayed at so we didnt hire a car. Instead we caught a boat that travelled regularly along the coast stopping in various ports and got off at various places to explore and eat. buses were also good. i cant remember there being a lot to do other than that to be honest.

This. When they say heated pool, it really is only just enough to take the edge off. I can only just get in a heated pool in the Canaries in the winter. But I wouldn't be able to get in an unheated pool at all. Last time I was there, it was just me and a load of kids in the heated pool, no other adult could manage to get in.

It could be that the reviewers just haven't realised that the pool is heated. Because it often doesn't really feel like it is!

peachystormy · 09/01/2025 21:01

Just back from Tenerife in late December. Two big pools at our hotel, one was definitely heated as the other one was much much colder. I couldn't go in it. But a few days later I tried it and stayed in a good 5 minutes swimming then it was ok

EveInEden · 18/02/2025 16:05

Just got back from there. I found them fine once in. Could swim around the lazy river for around forty minutes. Back out in the sun, then back in. Lots of adults in the pool.

FrogsLoveRain · 23/02/2025 19:33

I've been twice to the Baobab though admittedly it was c10 years ago. I do however remember the pool near the bar being heated. It was warm.

pwish · 23/02/2025 21:17

Tabaiba Princess in GC heats some pools over winter, they are noticeably warmer than the un-heated ones, enough for my kids to take a dip, but not me, and not enough if the sun wasn't shining.
