Can anyone make suggestions for Richmond?

We have friends coming to stay and they want to spend a day on the river. As a north Londoner I'm clueless. Richmond? Always heard it's beautiful? There will be adults and children So a walk I guess, a pub lunch? Is the park near Richmond Tube. Or BR?

With thanks in advance.

v briefly nkf
river is near enough to tube/BR (same station), park slightly less so but still walkable.
Not been there for a while but it is really lovely, I'd definitely go for it.

Thanks. River walk to park maybe.

There is a fab tapas bar next to the station.

Have just googled, can't find the name of it, but we had a lovely lunch there.

Also, go to the chocolate shop on the village green.

That's the eating bit sorted. {grin}.

the gaucho grill is nice for food, its on the RIver. Suitable for kids too I think.

Kew Gardens (kew Gardens stop)
Richmond Park

Glasshouse near Kew usually good.

Petersham lovely, but a bit of a trek (Petersham Nursery and Ham House here)

Oh yes, the chocolate place (William Curley) is to die for!

I'd say kew gardens rather than the river. Lots for the little ones to do and you avoid all the pissed people hanging out of the pubs on the river in Richmond.

Pembroke Lodge in Richmond park is lovely for teas and cakes and the view over Richmond is great.
If you do go to Petersham Nurseries you can walk up the hill through the park to the lodge. (I wouldn't rec. Petersham Nurseries with kids though, its tooo beatiful and a bit ladidah. )

morningglory - the glasshouse is a v expensive michelin starred restaurant. You might mean the Greenhouse which is a cafe?!

Blimey I wouldn;t walk from Tube/Station to park its bloody miles and uphill. River is walkable but the bit in Richmond itself is quite built up but you can walk along the river.

Kew Bridge BR and Barnes bridge BR stations are also by the river and not far and Kew Bridge BR is walking distance to KEw Gardens and KEw green with pubs around the green.

Second (or third?) vote for William Curley but take out a mortgage before you go - choclates are a £1 a piece (and worth every penny)

Kewcumber · 07/05/2008 14:52

Bree I think tapas place is Don fernando's?

Another vote for Kew gardens. We have yearly membership (£35) so pop in there all the time.

There are ferries which leave from Richmond riverside which go to Hampton Court etc, good on a nice day out.

We enjoy walking down from the BR station Along the riverside into Twickenham, passes Marble Hill park with playground for the kiddliwinks.

We like Gourmet Burger Kitchen, very informal dining - great with kids.

Enjoy x

Start in Marble Hill park - cheapish parking 1hr per 2h or 8mins in bus from tube/train w.
Large adventure playground for kids [5-15]about £3 for whole day for kids - open most weekends but not bank holidays. Lovely not for profit cafe in the park. Other side of the park is a traditional childrens playground with a cafe which sellies iceccream and snacks
Three choice then:
Walk up over Richmond bridge for a walk and drink along the river. Nice cafe on the riverfront which is really children friendly or lots of pubs.
Into Richmond for the pubs/ restaurants on the Green
Choice two
From marble hill park take the little ferry over to Ham House -about £1
Choice three
take bus up to richmond park -this will involve walking
great playground with large sandpit at the bottom with pub over the road
In richmond park - isabella planation is so beautiful with the rhodedrons at the moment
Drinks in Pembroke lodge - bit pricy but great views
hope this is not too late
