Sleeping arrangements when holidaying with adult children

Interested to know how others with adult children (daughter 21 and son 20) manage at all inclusive hotel resorts? myself and my husband don’t want to share a hotel room with the kids (as it would be nice to have some private time!) so considered booking two rooms, however my son and daughter would then need to share, which isn’t ideal, but 3 separate rooms is probably outside our budget! We normally book a 3 bed villa but are looking for something different this year. How do others manage?

Your kids are 20 and 21, they should be paying for their own holidays!!

We have had 2 rooms, one for us and one for DC, the last time was 2 years ago when they were 22 and 20, they have been sharing a room ever since they were old enough to sleep separately.

Dollmeup · 08/01/2025 16:58

Me and my brother shared a room on holiday at that age. It was fine, we just used the bathroom for getting changed. We would not have wanted to be in with our parents at that age.

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · 08/01/2025 17:00

Either 2 rooms interconnecting and they share - if they don’t want to share they need to contribute to make it 3 bedrooms

AltitudeCheck · 08/01/2025 17:07

So long as they get along ok they should be able to share a twin room or toss a coin to see who gets the sofa bed etc. On holiday you aren't spending much time in the room anyway.

They can get changed in the bathroom or when the other is out/ sat on the balcony etc. At that age my brother was visiting me at Uni and crashing on the floor in my room and we managed to make it work.

There’s always one isn’t there.

For the record load of uni students still go on family holidays. And enjoy it. And the parents actually want them there!

Quitelikeit · 08/01/2025 17:10

You get a one bed aparthotel that sleeps 4 and they sleep in the living room on the twin beds

These are ten to the dozen so you can’t have looked very much

You can also get two bed apartments

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 08/01/2025 17:11

Why can't they share? And also yes they should be paying at those ages

828Pax · 08/01/2025 17:13

There's no 'should be paying' about it? If the OP wants to pay for her adult children to go on holiday then that is completely up to her?

MyNewLife2025 · 08/01/2025 17:30

I’d expect the dcs to share.
Id also ask first twin beds so they dint have to share a bed iyswim
(My two ds still do that from time to time. Similar age than your dcs. But there is constant grumbling that dc2 doesn’t stay on his side etc….)

ScaryM0nster · 08/01/2025 17:32

Share a room with twin beds.

isthesolution · 08/01/2025 17:32

They need to share or pay for their own rooms. Simples.

ItGhoul · 08/01/2025 17:33

If you can't pay for three rooms, then the options are:

a) your kids share
b) your kids go on holiday with you but pay for their own rooms
c) your kids don't go on holiday with you at all because they're adults now

So I suggest you simply ask them which of those three options they would prefer. But if they don't mind sharing a room, that's fine. It needs to be up to them. But if they don't want to share a room they need to either pay for a room of their own or not go at all.

I would have thought that for most families, the default would be option C. I don't think most adults go on a family holiday every year with their mum and dad, to be honest.

MyNewLife2025 · 08/01/2025 17:34

I’m not sure what’s the point of asking 2 ‘adults’ still at Uni and not earning ‘to pay their way’.
Esp if it’s the OP who is funding Uni.

Esp as it is of benefit to the OP to make it easy for them to come.
My dcs at Uni rarely come home. Having them there together, esp in hols is an opportunity I wouldn’t want to miss.

If they're working full time, yes. If they're full time students, of course not.

Of our adult kids come with us we always pay. Otherwise they fund their own.

MermaidEyes · 08/01/2025 17:36

@MyNewLife2025 I think some people genuinely don't like their kids and don't want them to come on holidays with them anymore 😆

Mulchadoaboutnothing12 · 08/01/2025 17:36

Would an air BnB give you more options op?

MyNewLife2025 · 08/01/2025 17:36

@ItGhoul what you’re saying us that you dint expect adults to want to spend time with theyr parents, esp not a full week on hols.

Id beg to differ.
Plus, my dcs would jump at the opportunity of a free hols!

Shodan · 08/01/2025 17:36

Before ds1 met his girlfriend (and she started coming away with us) I would expect them to share. But if ds1 wanted his own room (there's a 12 year age gap) I'd probably work out some way of divvying up the difference in cost.

We always book a villa/airbnb for this very reason though (with a 'spare' room so those of us who have to sleep with snorers have somewhere to escape to if needed!)

It’s not that, I wouldn’t have wanted to go on holiday with my parents at that age!!
if the OP insists on paying and can’t afford 3 rooms then they’ll have to suck it up and share a twin or pay for their own holiday

MiddleAgedDread · 08/01/2025 16:48

Your kids are 20 and 21, they should be paying for their own holidays!!

It depends on whether the OP wants them on this holiday
At that age, a self funded holiday is a holiday with their mates, not their parents

TartanMammy · 08/01/2025 17:39

I'd go for a 2 bed apartment style accommodation, then you have the living room space to use too. These usually have a sofa bed. We've done this set up many times on Jet2 all inclusive resorts.
