Hi everyone I'm a bit embarrassed as I'm 39 and only naw this year I'm actually going abroad for the first time with my husband and son. We can't wait. Could anyone go through with me what to expect in airport I'm getting really bad anxiety over this incase I don't know how to do something. Also when I'm over the otherside like will the coach be there waiting for us. What proof will I need sorry if I'm sounding so pathetic. Any help will be great 😃 👍

Hi op! How exciting! Where are you off to?

Obviously you'll all need valid passports. At the airport just be aware of restrictions on eg liquids in luggage you're carrying on to the plane. Going through security you and your bags will be scanned, you'll need to empty your pockets into the trays they provide at the scanner, pop your phone etc in there too - they do have staff throughout the queue telling you what to do.

Have you booked checked bags? Have you reserved seats together on the plane?

On the 'other side' - have you booked a coach transfer for where you'll be staying?

What to expect will depend on a few things. Do you have checked in baggage? If you do you’ll drop that off before security. If you only have hand luggage you’ll go straight to security. If you only have hand luggage then liquid can only be 100ml or less. You’ll probably have to check in online before you arrive at the airport. Then you can just have your boarding passes on your phone. You’ll need to show them with your passports at various points.

once you’ve been through security you can enjoy the wonders of duty free and get something to eat and drink. If we fly from our nearest airport our tradition since the kids were young is to get Burger King (classy I know) but lots of people like to start their holidays by having a drink.

then you just kind of hang around and wait until your gate opens. You can find your flight on the big board and it’ll tell you which gate to go to. Then go to the gate and get on the plane.

when you arrive you go through passport control where you show your passports again and they’re stamped. Then go and collect your home baggage if you have it. If you only have carry on then just walk straight out.

the coaches are outside and whoever you’ve booked through should give instructions about what you have to do. Some of the bigger proivider such as tui have people waiting for you. Love holidays, on the beach etc usually send instructions to go to a desk where you give your details and they tell you which bus to get on. It’s all pretty straight forward.

have a lovely time!!

Airports are large and a bit confusing if you haven't been before so get there in plenty of time, take your time and don't panic. There are lots of boards and signs to tell you where to go. Go to departures, if you have checked baggage then you need to go to the desk for your airline and line up to get it checked in - it's been years since we checked bags so I'm assuming it's still the same!

Then find security and go through, you'll need to scan your boarding pass to get in. You may or may not have to take your liquids out and have them in a clear plastic bag - we put them in one anyway even though it's not always necessary now. Often you need them in the airport on the way home anyway. You'll have to take off anything bulky and they don't like you to over load trays so it's often coat in one, bag in another and electronics and liquids in another - electronics may not have to come out either now at certain airports though. Just watch the people in front of you and listen to the people working there.

Then you go through a scanner and might get pulled for a search, it's normal if you do don't worry! If you can't find one of the trays with your stuff in it might have been pulled - we've forgotten and left a big sun cream in there a couple of times so if it doesn't come through it might have gone the other side to be checked.

Then you're in duty free and you go through to the departures hall, check the boards for your flight they'll tell you what time your flight gate will be up. Then when your gate is up you follow the signs for your gate number. Then you wait again for your flight to start boarding.

When you arrive you'll go through passport control and then need to get your bags from baggage reclaim if you have any. When you come out into arrivals there will probably be someone with a sign for your travel company (assuming that you have one and have booked transfers with them). Otherwise they should have already told you where to go to get the coach.

Have a great time!

Thanks all. I'm going to Tenerife in June it a package holiday so everything all in luggage transfers just a bit of anxiety with everything. I thought the travel agent will give boarding passes as I was advised to print off aswell as having it online incase of phone battery or something like that . It's all new to me all this

You can print them if you like. It’s probably sensible to. I just don’t usually bother, I like to live dangerously 😂😂. They can usually print them for you anyway at the airport as long as you’re already checked in online before you go.
