Greece for dd studying Classics

TheMousePipes · 05/01/2025 16:12

Dd is really enjoying her classics gcse and would like to take a level as well. She has asked to go to Greece and see some of the historical monuments.
I know lots about other places but bugger all about Greece. We’re thinking to go for a week in October- should I be looking at Athens for a week? Anywhere else I should be considering?
Is anyone able to give me some pointers please? They would be most gratefully received.

Just planned something similar for DS. October is a great time to go - weather should be lovely for sightseeing.
I would recommend a few days in Athens, there really is a ton to see. Get a tour or private guide. In Athens you want to do of course Acropolis (plus museum) Archeological Museum, Temple of Zeus, Agora, Temple of Hephaestus.
Then go to Delphi to see the temple of Apollo.
If staying for a week, you could also do Mycenae, Nafplio and/or Olympia.

twistyizzy · 05/01/2025 16:26

I am sat here planning exactly the same thing. Have found several options with archaeological guides but all the tours are for 16+ and DD is 13.

murasaki · 05/01/2025 16:32

Mycenae is astonishing, and Tiryns is close. Another vote for Delphi and Olympia. I was lucky to have a school classics trip that covered that and Athens, amazing.

murasaki · 05/01/2025 16:34

Nestor's Palace at Pylos was also good.

or you could do a different view, and go to Create, Knossos etc.

Medenagan · 05/01/2025 16:38

I take Classics students to Greece every couple of years (often in October). Our usual trip includes Athens (Acropolis + museum, Agora, National Archaeological Museum etc), Delphi, Olympia, Mycenae, Epidauros, Tiryns and Corinth. You can do this as a loop in a week, but would probably need to hire a car and would need to do a fair bit of driving. I’ve also done a few days in Athens, with a day taking the ferry to nearby islands and a trip up to Delphi too. Enjoy Greece - we always have an amazing time and the students learn so much.

There are so many wonderful sites and not just Greece! But yes, Athens is perfect as a place to start and as a base - not just the Acropolis, there are loads of sites, the best museum is the National Archaelogical Museum, and you can go to Piraeus etc easily, and if you have family members less keen on classical sites, do a 'day trip' to other places, cruise round the islands, watch the changing of the guards at parliament or make it a 2 centre holiday as some of the other best sites are a way away.
There is a lot to see in Athens and some good hotels close to the Acropolis (advice - go EARLY in the morning to beat the crowds)

Other top sites: Mycanae, Epidaurus, Cape Sounion, Olympia, Corinth, Delphi...As well as Athens, Delphi in my view is unbeatable. It feels like walking back into another civilisation, but it's a pain to get to, in the middle of nowhere. It's worth taking a studentcard/ ID as some sites will let her go behind the scenes (depends on her age!)

At University, the course is dominated by those from wealthy backgrounds. Some Universities offer students an option to apply for funding to visit the sites at the end of the 2nd year. If your daughter is from a 'normal' as opposed to a wealthy background she would be be in a strong position to apply if you don't get there as a family! Also, students from the whole dept (not just Archaeology) can get the chance to go on digs.

murasaki · 05/01/2025 17:20

Yes, my university college paid for my end of first year trip to Crete. I just had to submit a 500 word essay when I got back on what I'd seen and learned. I was an assiduous user of the hardship fund...

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 05/01/2025 20:53

And Olympia and Delphi

TheMousePipes · 05/01/2025 22:50

Ooh lots of fellow classicists! Thanks for the advice/enthusiasm/ thoughts- I shall look more closely at them all.

Hello, bumping this thread as planning a similar trip (week flying to Athens) in the Easter holidays. My year 9 son is planning Latin and History GCSEs and wanted to take Classical Greek too but school no longer offer it.
We had a fantastic week in Rome in 2024 and hoping to replicate…
Particularly interested in recommendations for hotels and tour operators for the bit outside Athens…

Crete is lovely, but it was the Minoan Empire, as opposed to classical Greece.

schoolsoutforever · 03/11/2025 20:54

I teach Classical Civilisation. Definitely recommend Athens, Delphi and Olympia if you can. Lucky daughter - she'll love it!

crackofdoom · 03/11/2025 20:55

Is the Classics GCSE based on drama/literature? (As my Classical Civilisation A level was 100 years ago 😆)

I'm wondering if you could catch a classical play being staged somewhere? There's an original amphitheatre behind the Acropolis where I believe they still stage performances.

Ha! Seek and ye shall find!! It looks so perfect I wouldn't be surprised if it was a fixture of the school Classics trip circuit already!

So we got 3 nights in Athens on our own but meeting up with the guide during the day. Rest of the trip is 4 days on coach. It was a small group of 11-13 of us on a mini coach with a guide.
The guide + trips + places were amazing and we would never have got to see so many things had we arranged it on our own eg we covered nearly 800 miles on the 4 day trip.
The downside is that although it was meant to be 4 star, some of the hotels (2 out of the 5 we stayed in) were really not great and the food on the trip was mediocre BUT to be honest we weren't there for luxury hotels + food so it was fine.

It was an amazing holiday but exhausting however DD loved it and hopefully it will help with her understanding and love of Classics. It was a holiday we won't forget and we have over 300 photos

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 05/04/2026 17:19

Just bumping to update, currently on holiday.
We have planned it independently, Jet2 flights, Expedia for Athens hotel.
We did the Panathenaic stadium, Acropolis, Acropolis museum, Ancient and Roman Agora in the first 2 days.
Booked a car and driver through Greek Taxis and we are doing a 4 night tour, today was Delphi which was incredible!
Also doing Kalvyrata, Olympia, Mycenae, Epidaurus, Corinth, Nafpoli.
When back in Athens we have Cape Sounion and the Archeological museum planned.
DS is in his element!
