Italy region for a holiday/road trip with tweens

I'm investigating areas for our summer holidays (family with 2 DS aged 11 and 13) and I'm thinking Italy might fit the bill. We like beautiful less developed beaches (not so fussed about them having facilities), pottering around pretty old towns, harbourside eating, swimming, and the boys love jumping off rocks into the sea. We're not at all interested in theme parks, museums, kids 'attractions' or any of that sort of thing, though the option to rent a paddleboard, boat or jetski would be good and I love pootling around pretty coves and islands in a boat. We're not keen on brits abroad type places. I like to visit at least one large historic town or small city, though I don't fancy trailing around any of the larger Italian cities in the middle of the summer.

It'll be August but we're ok with the heat. We tend to do a sort of small road trip hiring a car and staying in about three or four different towns and will usually cover around 400 miles+ in a fortnight, usually staying in a mixture of accommodations - maybe a villa with a pool for a week, a few nights in a couple of posh hotels and an airb&b for a night or two. We need to be able to fly in from Gatwick and often we fly into one airport and out of another. Our budget is healthy. Any suggestions for areas to look at please?

We went to lake Garda last August and had an amazing time! You could easily travel through a few cities - Verona, Venice, Garda to Milan?

Watching with interest as we're looking at Italy this year too.

We went to Lombardy a couple of years ago, Lake Iseo and Lovere. Not far from Garda but less touristy. We could easily have done a Milan day trip but it was when temperatures were in their 40's and we couldn't have coped with it
Teens loved it

Lake Garda and then the Dolomites or v.v. depending on quite how heat tolerant you are...absolutely gorgeous!

You could fly into Genoa and travel down the coast. Definitely check out Portofino, Monterosso al Mare (some good rocks for jumping off!), Vernazza, and Manarola. You could then head inland to visit Modena via a stop at Pontremoli. You’ve then got the option of flying out of Pisa or Florence.

Similar plan here (10 and 13) Would love accommodation recommendations for those who've done it. Cinqueterre would probably be jammed at that time but does sound amazing.

You don't need a car in Monterosso (Cinque Terre) or Portofino, although that section of coastline would fit your criteria, but they are overrun with tourists and cruise trips in summer. You could fly to Genoa and travel north or south along the coast for beaches, then meander down to Pisa or across to Bologna and explore Tuscany, with its hilltop towns and spas.

I would do Liguria, cheaper and less busy than Tuscany but loads to do and easily reached by car. Fly into Genoa and pick up a car at the airport.

Italy is beautiful. Maybe also have a look at Sicily.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm thinking about the Med coast rather than lakes. I love the fish and the warm water. Thanks though.
