Good places in Austria with kids

We are hoping to going to Austria in the summer with our kids (ages 15 - 8) to hike. They are all good walkers and we love the mountains but I don't like to take them anywhere too edgy (no more than T2 equivalent - though I think that's just a Swiss rating? Im just too terrified to watch them!). Ideally we'd like to be somewhere for a week with plenty of different routes options from the village. Would be very grateful for any recommendations of potential areas.. quieter areas preferred - thanks!

we took our kids here a couple of times it’s near zell am see. Once as younger kids then again as older teens. I think the pool might be new as I remember an outdoor pool not part of the complex but nothing like that. It’s great for outdoors stuff as you have the cable cars up to the glacier for walks etc and maybe even summer skiing. You are also close to Tauern spa which was great and the grossglochnerstrasse which is a long steep road with awesome views and lots of cyclists. We also did a day to saltzberg which was brilliant especially recreating all the sound of music scenes but it’s much more than just that.

Ps I just noticed your ‘quieter’ requirement. I don’t like noisy sites and found this relaxing

We have stayed in st johan for a week with kids aged 7, 10 and 13. Good base for walking and self catering with supermarkets.
Last year stayed in walchsee, kids a year older enjoyed it so much booked same accommodation for this year. Lots of walking options and lake swimming and we visited salzburg and Eagles Nest.
The footpaths are graded - 'only for experts' will take you on ridge walks, we have been caught out with this once so are very careful now to map out and plan using all trails and route maps from tourist information office.
Generally we walk all day so cover a lot of ground but vary the walks to keep kids interested, waterfalls, mountain lakes, cable cars up and circular walks on top. Many of the big mountains have fantastic play areas on the top or half way up.

Agree with Zell Am Zee. We spent athe summer and love it. As well as the mountains there are a few little "resorts" where you can swim safely in the lake, with slides, inflatables, seperated off from boat traffic.

@Billybagpuss sorry to jump on this post. We are staying here this year. Did you get the summer card from the eurocamp? Also how did you find getting to places from the site or did you have enough to do onsite? Thanks. We have 2 young children with us 8 and 4.

It’s absolutely perfect at that age, there’s playgrounds and a gym, the swim lake is beautiful. You do need a car. We had a morning at the Tauern spa and swapped parent duties so we both got to go in the saunas etc. we also did day trips to Saltzberg and Maria Alm.

we’ve been twice the first time our dd were the same age as yours and I think we did an animal park etc. that time.

it’s still up there with the best holidays for all of us, both times.

Thank you. We are delayed whether to hire a car or not. Do you recommend definitely getting one? We thought we could get bus or train places.

Billybagpuss · 04/06/2025 09:58

@Roosty38 ps I don’t recall the eurocamp summer card but think we may have been key camp that time. Is a while ago.

Honestly I have no idea on public transport, traditionally Germany Austria and Switzerland are very good but we always drove from the uk. I think you would be more limited with public transport especially with youngsters limiting your walking mileage and we also drove up the grossglochnerstrasse which the kids actually loved they got to play in the snow a bit in summer clothes and sandals.

Thank you. Think we going to do both and hire a car for 2 or 3 days whilst there.
