Husband’s 40th bday - help!

Hello Mumsnet, my husband is turning 40 next year and I want to take him and our 2 young kids (will be both under 3) away. I’m on a budget as on mat leave and it needs to be family friendly, but still have a grown up element as I’d like the focus to be celebrating his bday. Any ideas?! Thank you!

What month are you looking at going?

Sorry that would be helpful wouldn’t it! We’d be looking around June. Thanks!

I'd probably look at getting some cheap flights and an AirBNB somewhere like Malaga in Spain. Beaches for the kids and likely accommodation with a pool bit also a lovely old town to explore. Either that or somewhere like Lisbon but I think that would be harder with prams etc.

We have been to Morrocco a few times and you can get some great 5 star hotels for much cheaper than other countries. Agadir is very touristy and felt very safe, we have stayed in Marrakesh before but our kids found that a bit more overwhelming.

I would do euro camp in France, budget friendly will be sunny, so family friendly and if you can a 3 bed van with decking and aircon, once the little ones are asleep you can sit on the decking and have a nice bottle of something to celebrate.

So you won't be stuck in a hotel room from 7pm!

Perfect for that age of kids and way cheaper than hotels and airb&bs

Most to the camps on the west coast are fabulous.

I’d go to Greece as it’s lovely in June and very small child friendly. Corfu, Kefalonia or Crete would be good picks IMO with some nice towns to visit and good restaurants as well as beaches. It is a longer flight than Spain though so depends how you feel about that, also what deals you can find!

Majorca could work too - a few days in Palma and a few days beach?

What is your budget and for how long?

Bloome22 · 23/12/2024 13:05

Thanks, I’d say maximum £2k and between 4-7 nights. I don’t travel much these days - I don’t know if that is a realistic budget?

We have stayed at here and also the founty beach, both are coming in around £2k for a week all inclusive for some random dates in June. It’s a great area right on the beach.

MyStylish40s · 23/12/2024 13:30

I’m going to suggest Mallorca

Bloome22 · 23/12/2024 19:55

Fab suggestions thank you so much! Definitely going to look into all of those. I was also wondering if anyone’s travelled by
train (eg Eurostar) to any destinations? Gut feel I think flying will be easier, but don’t want to rule out the train or ferry either. Thanks! x

Yes. If you like resorts, you could get a budget airline package in June for 5 or 6 nights to somewhere in Europe on that price. Either AI or using the extra for food. With toddlers I'd probably look at Iberia rather than the Eastern Med, unless you have a particular preference. Never done eurocamp but I hear good things about it.

Also, when you say 'around June' how much flexibility is there with that? If you can go the week before May half term, which is usually the same in most of England cos of exams, there are often really good prices to be had. It won't be as warm, but that may be no bad thing with toddlers?
