Dolomites in January?

We have a free weekend at the end of January, Thursday to Sunday, and would love to book a child free trip to somewhere beautiful.

I’m drawn to the Dolomites, particularly the hotels next to the lakes nestled in the mountains. We’re not bothered about a full itinerary, just enjoying each other’s company for a few days with good food and stunning views!

Has anyone been during winter and what were your experiences? We were thinking of flying to Venice and renting a car.

Open to any recommendations of winter getaways too - I’m also considering Grindelwald or somewhere similar in Switzerland but these are a little harder to get to.

TIA :)

Haven’t visited the Dolomites yet but they are on my list!

I have been to Grindelwald though. It is absolutely stunning. Scenery is spectacular. I didn’t stay there, but the Hotel Glacier looked amazing & has private hot tubs on the balcony facing the Eiger. You can get there via train from Zurich or Geneva. The trains are also fab & I recommend you download the SBB app before travelling.

Wonderful - thank you so much! That hotel looks incredible and I imagine the train journey to and from would be equally as beautiful as the destination :)

We go to the Dolomites every year. We go to ski though and most of the resorts are geared towards that in the winter. Are you looking for winter walks? Snowy vistas? A town with things to do for non skiers?
The drive up from Venice is pretty easy although you might have to take a longer route round if any of the mountain passes are closed by snow. Winter tyres or snow chains are obligatory.

Sounds lovely!

Views of the snowy vistas a must, a nice hotel, and winter walks would be great but perhaps not full on extreme hiking trails! A cute little town would be ideal but we also wouldn’t mind somewhere remote. We’ve been looking at the Hotel Lago di Braies but it seems like this would be a better spring/fall option rather than winter.

Do you have any ideas? :)

If your budget will stretch to it, Forestis in the Dolomites. Absolutely stunning views, amazing spa and probably the best hotel food I've ever had. There are plenty of gentle walks directly from the hotel that you can do in Winter and the hotel is adults only so perfect for a kid free break. I also went in January one year. The hotel is relatively remote but if you have a car there are also several small towns nearby. It's slightly closer to drive from Munich than Venice though, you can also fly to Verona and drive from there.

Can't really recommend hotels as we tend to go cheap and cheerful! Alleghe has a pretty lake though and has nice restaurants and shops with walks nearby.

Wow - this is stunning! Definitely going on the bucket list, but maybe a little bit out of our budget for next year. I will have a look around the area as the scenery is ethereal. Thank you!
