Will everything be closed? Restaurants and cafes? Can you suggest what is possible?

I’m travelling solo. Any other suggestions greatly appreciated.

Maybe a day for wandering the streets, the squares, visiting external monuments and seeing the outsides of buildings. I haven't been there on Christmas Day, but hotels will have to have food options available, that might be your only option. Tourists sites will be closed, churches will be open for services only.

I've spent Christmas in Italy a few times, but not Florence. Christmas Eve is very culturally significant in Italy. We usually went to the markets, had our main Christmas meal (like most of the locals) and then stayed up to go to midnight mass (ditto). So we then had a big lie and relax in on xmas day, with simple food followed by a walk around as PP suggests. I'm confident you will find some things open but agree that planning a hotel meal makes good sense. Boxing Day is also a public holiday in lots of Italy (St Stephens Day). publicholidays.it/st-stephens-day/
Watching a live preseppe /nativity procession is so fantastic if there is one near you, I've only seen one once in northern Italy but def worth trying to see if there will be one in Florence

Useful starting points. Of course to Mass.
