I won a trip to Amsterdam! I am very excited but have no time to plan/research as it is very soon and my work schedule is crazy.
We are staying on Nicolaas Witsenstraat between Central Amsterdam and De Pijp. 3 nights, 4 days! I last went 30 years ago - can't wait to see how it has changed :)

Thanks so much for any help!

Canal trip, Rijsmuseum. Flower market. Ann Frank's house, if you can bear it

Any boat trip recommendations - I fancy seeing the light festival from the water :)

And does anyone know anywhere nice to eat? Not trendy or cool, just lovely and reasonably priced - thank you

I loved the canal museum. I enjoyed the rijksmuseum more than any other museum I've been to, but that might have been the effect of the space cake I ate on the way there 😂

Anne Frank's house is very moving and sad but if you are remotely claustrophobic don't do it.

Needanadultgapyear · 13/12/2024 14:25

Book online for the Anne Frank house so you don't need to queue.
Have a hop on hop off ticket on canals will help you to get to the museums.
If you have children with you Nemo the science museum is great.

I am not going to go to the Anne Frank house as I have been before and it made me very sad for a few days and still haunts me - I am very glad I visited. Thanks so much

all of the above :)
Nemo Museum - more for kids, but you can walk on top for the view
Upside Down Amsterdam is fun
Van Gogh Museum
Heineken Experience
The Christmas lights are on now, so I would go for a boat trip in the evening
The Zaanse Schans windmills - i don't know if it's open at this time of year and you have to travell a bit

Have a look at www.iamsterdam.com for more ideas.

A GVB (Amsterdam's main public transport company) travel card may be worth getting. Alternatively an Amsterdam & Region travel card covers a larger area. The 9292.nl app is great for public transport planning.

It's also worth taking the free ferries from behind Amsterdam Centraal Station over to the Noord/North area, which has various attractions.

Have a great trip. It's my favourite city; I'd like to see the light festival there one day.

Definitely a canal trip - we went on a small boat, which was very good - they guy had always lived in Amsterdam so knew loads
Enjoy!

BuzzieLittleBee · 13/12/2024 17:36

Wander around the 9 streets
Van Gough museum (if you haven't been)
Cafes in the Pijp area
The floating flower market
The Struisvogel restaurant (translates as The Ostrich)

And I'd have said definitely Ann Frank, but I see you've done that.

Thanks so much - amazing recommendations! I am so excited!

We discovered this one when we went in October
https://opsolder.nl/en/museum-our-lord-in-the-attic/

It's a hidden church which was how the protestant Dutch dealt with remaing catholic citizen.

The Begijnhof is also lovely to be away from the hussle.

HereComesYourMam · 15/12/2024 08:51

I also highly recommend the hidden church recommended above - it was my favourite thing we did in Amsterdam. You go up through the whole house to the attic so you see what the kitchen, living quarters etc of a typical town house from that period would have been like, so interesting.

Recommend going on one of the smaller, more indie boat trips (we did Flagship but there are a few that pick up from different points).

BigDahliaFan · 15/12/2024 09:26

The church in the attic was a highlight for me of sightseeing. Enjoyed a canal trip too. But wandering around nice bars eating bread ham and cheese with fancy beers was lovely...

Coalplay · 15/12/2024 09:31

Book ahead for the van Gogh museum. We really like the seafood bar restaurant and I’ve got a couple of really nice brunch spots if you’re not having breakfast at your hotel.

Coalplay · 15/12/2024 09:32

There’s a new museum open this year about the Netherlands during the Holocaust

That needs prior booking - we looked it up too late and all slots were gone.

Alternatively, the Resistance Museum is also very good.
