Anyone been? Any tips or advice? Looking to stay in Roma and have a day trip out to see the ruins at Teotihuacan.

We were there 6-7 years ago, so things might have changed.
There's a museum that is free for locals on certain day(s), avoid !
We had to pay whatever day, & the place was rammed & very noisy.

We were also caught out with 2 trips we booked & paid for. Can't remember the details, but they were rolled into one whistle-stop tour & we barely had time to take pics. Complaining was futile.

We had an amazing time a couple of years ago. We stayed in Condesa and were able to walk to some of the museums and there were great restaurants and bars. It takes time to get places, traffic is heavy so factor that in. Ubers were dirt cheap so we used those as there were 4 of us and it was easier than messing about with public transport. If you don’t want a guided tour you can get a taxi drive to take you to the ruins and wait. Cheaper than an organised trip and there are lots of guides there if you want.
We did a brilliant food tour of the La Merced market and the Lucho Libre was great fun.

That’s great thank you. Condensate sounds like a good area. We want somewhere safe to walk to eat at night. Any restaurant recommendations?

Know Mexico City extremely well. Condesa and Roma are good areas to stay. Close enough to everything, safe, and lots of places to eat and drink.

In terms of things to do and see, I'd recommend.

A day around the Historic Centre (zocalo, cathedral) and the attractions around Parque Alameda (Bellas Artes, Post Office Building etc). Always enjoy a breakfast at El Cardenal if in the historic centre. Azul Historic, or Limosneros for Dinner.

Day pottering around Coyoacan. Lovely neighbourhood and you can visit Frida Kahlo's house. Neighbouring San Angel is lovely as well, and if you go on a Saturday you have the "Bazar Sabado" market.

Chapultepec Castle, Park and the Anthropology Museum which borders Condesa. Could even nip up to Polanco which is the high end shopping bit (although a bit soulless for me), I like the Soumaya and Jumex museums there.

Teotihuacan definitely worth the day trip, as is Xochimilco, bring some food, drink and go on the colourful trajineras.

As someone mentioned above, Lucha Libre is incredibly fun to visit. I'd recommend Arena Mexico for the CMLL show, just be a bit wary of your surroundings as it's in a slightly dodgy area, albeit full of people, just head back East towards Cuauhtemoc Avenue once done. If any interest in football obviously the Azteca Stadium is iconic and you could do a tour/watch a game as it's a club stadium too (even though my family are all fans of the main city rival so i'd get in trouble for saying that).

Food and Drink is incredibly hard to recommend without knowing what you're looking for. Street Food is mostly great, the high end restaurants are mostly great and in between is mostly great. The things I never miss are tacos el pastor at "El Vilsito", the aforementioned Breakfast/Brunch at El Cardenal, and a "Torta de Chilaquil" from La Esquina de Chilaquiles in Condesa. If you are specifically wanting restaurant recs for Roma and Condesa, then "Contramar" is an obvious choice, it's full of Instagram posers these days but it's still great, booking way in advance essential. I also really enjoyed "Meroma" on our last visit too, and have had good high end experiences at Maximo Bistrot and Em.

There is a big speakeasy cocktail scene in D.F. currently as well with loads of good options around Condesa/Roma/Juarez.

It's a bloody fantastic city.

@morningbell that's absolutely amazing thank you!

No worries, happy to answer any other questions as best I can.

In terms of logistics as @JWR mentioned, Uber is reliable and safe, some locals use DiDi. Metro is also fine as is the Metrobus. I find the city surprisingly walkable as well though.

Get probiotics down you prior to going, and buy peptobismol whilst there. The food is fantastic but there is also a decent risk of getting the old Montezuma's revenge whilst there.

Not sure when you're going, but if it's in the next 2 months or so, take a jacket for the evening. The altitude means it can get a bit chilly on an evening, which can catch people out who have a certain impression of Mexican weather!

Thank you. We'll be there late Feb. Thinking of tacking a coup,e of days on so 5 days Mexico City and then a night or two somewhere like cholula or similar if you have any suggestions? Don't really fancy hiring a car.

Cholula is worth a visit, probably a day trip though rather than anything more. Combine with Puebla which is nice in its own right as well.

Probably a sensible place if you wanted to do a side trip given it's only 2.5 hours away, but to be honest, with a week, I'd probably just spend it in Mexico City.

FiatMultiplaWhopper · 19/12/2024 13:32

I loved doing a food tour of the markets

uber is cheap and easy to get around.

leave loads of time to get back to the airport because the traffic can be hellish

LunaNorth · 19/12/2024 13:36

Bloody loved Mexico City. Teotihuacan was awe-inspiring, the Post Office Building had amazing murals, the cathedral was stunning, and we still boggle at the fact we got trundled past the icons on a travelator!
