My husband had heart failure a few years ago (been fine since) and I’d like to know what I’m up against

We won’t be going for a couple of years so obviously I know it’ll go up but it’d good to know how much I need to plan for

Just phone a broker and ask for a quote as if you were going to eg Spain in a few weeks

crumpet · 12/12/2024 13:37

It will give you a better idea

TeapotCollection · 12/12/2024 13:43

Thanks for that

I didn’t realise there were brokers for this, last time we went abroad (years ago) you booked insurance with the travel agent when booking the holiday

Compare the .market etc do travel insurance.

You can do a price comparison with Moneysupermarket, we went through them with Admiral (I had cancer a year ago, now clear, and it cost £70 for 2 of us for a week in Europe).

We had to find some travel insurance in a hurry when there was an admin cockup with my company cover. DH has a few 'pre-existing conditions' so this wasn't easy! You're definitely wise to think about it ahead of time. Anyway, this company may be worth looking at if you need more specialist cover.

Just go to one of the many online comparison sites, input the details (you can just guess the dates and destination), and you'll get lots of different options/prices etc. Even with uncertain dates/destinations, you'll get a good idea of likely costs.

Also check with your bank. A friend got cover from her bank for a rare condition when everyone else quoted a crazily unaffordable amount.

Do the same as you would for car insurance. Go compare or quidco compare.
These work even with multiple complex health conditions. I have a history of cancer, a heart problem, RA, osteoporosis and more. DH has high BP. Our annual policy costs around £450

Remember that if you are travelling to the EU (and one or two other destinations) you are entitled to local healthcare free with the GHIC card. This covers emergency and ongoing treatment (like dialysis or weekly tests) but not elective procedures. So you may not need a ton of healthcare cover in the travel insurance, because the local public system will be there for you if DH's heart gives problems. The GHIC also doesn't cover repatriation, but it is a big help and will give some peace of mind because unlike private insurance there are no exclusions for pre-existing conditions.

Thank you everyone, hopefully I’ll be able to look at this in the week

It’s the Maldives I’m looking at 🤞 but we won’t be going until 2027. I’ve just got a horrible feeling insurance is going to be astronomical because of my husband’s previous heart failure, hence the admittedly ridiculous forward planning so that I can save up
