As adult beginners you will be on the very basic slopes for the first few days, maybe even the whole week if you are not especially sporty. More experienced skiers like it if they can step out of the ski room straight on to the snow and just ski down to the first lift, but you don't need that. So don't worry too much about the precise location.
Prepare to be exhausted and frustrated, and to fall over a lot, because it's such an unnatural set of movements for most people. It is so hard not to lean back as you gather speed, and to keep the weight on the downhill ski in a curve (when the "downhill" ski changes halfway through). I was almost in tears after a couple of days, as it reminded me of all my childhood late development issues (tying shoelaces, learning to ride a bike, etc) But when it clicks it's a great feeling. I'm a bit too old to enjoy it now, but over a few years I managed to get to the point where I could do a black run if necessary without freezing with fear,
