Recommendations for over 50's singles holidays in UK

queenofthedryshampoo · 05/12/2024 10:36

I am determined to get myself out of a rut next year and one of the things I'd like to do is travel more. I am interested in trying out a singles holiday ..in the UK to start with while I get my confidence up! Ideally I'd like to go somewhere with activities etc..not have to share a room and because I'm mid-50's I think one aimed at over 40's/50's would be better. I have looked at Warner hotels which look quite good. If anyone has any recommendations or tips I would be so grateful Flowers

Hi, OP. We can see you haven't had much luck posting this in Chat, so we will move it to our Holidays board now and see if anyone can help you there.

What sort of activities did you have in mind? A guided walking holiday could be an option if you're fairly active?

My mum takes herself off on coach tours around Scotland by herself, there's no minimum age but they're more aimed at 60+ really with a fairly relaxed pace and lots of stops at tea shops. Nothing wrong with that if it's what you enjoy of course!

Or pick a base, somewhere like York, Edinburgh or Liverpool and go sightseeing?

Don't be scared to try a tour abroad though. Many companies offer singles holidays and can be as active or relaxed as you like and are a great way to meet like-minded travellers. You'll probably have a lot more choice than in the UK as well.

Not a singles holiday, but a few months ago I (F, early 50s) went on a 2-week cruise by myself. I went with P&O and they advertise (unhosted) solo traveller meet ups each morning and evening on sea days. I met a fantastic bunch of people aged from 20s to 80s and we tended to split up into smaller groups to have dinner with, to go off the ship into the various ports or to take organised excursions with. I could join in or go off and read a book as I wanted and had a fantastic time - I'd absolutely recommend it. I've already booked my next cruise!

You could try Explore Worldwide for foreign travel, I did loads of solo travel with them. My friend also had a great experience on a cruise as a single person. Or Saga? Maybe a bit old for you though.

A friend went with Bridgewater holidays and said most of the travellers were single

Thank you so much all for the suggestions Flowers

You might also consider Spice Social and their holiday affiliate, Spice Escapes.

Flash pack do 45+ holidays that look great but expensive

For active holidays look at The Wild Swimming Co, although I think single rooms will not always be on offer as venues vary. Not restricted to singles but lots are. I’m same age as you, had a brilliant weekend trying sea swimming this Summer with a bunch of excellent women, all standards and levels of nerves catered for (I was completely new to it but now a bit hooked and have carried on outdoors swimming locally). The Gutsy Girls website also looks interesting.

MiddleAgedDread · 12/12/2024 11:33

HF holidays aren't exclusively for singles but you tend to find a mix of couples / friends / singles

User364837 · 12/12/2024 11:34

Solos is a good company - I went on a short break to a UK city with them and enjoyed it. Not exclusively over 50s (I’m 40s) but mostly.

Dinoswearunderpants · 12/12/2024 11:36

Cruises are always a good option. Some cruise companies have solo cabins but for a lot you would need to pay double occupancy. However, they often have single meet ups and also dining tables with other people so you can get chatting to them.

NCL offer solo cabins on some ships. I've cruised solo on Royal Caribbean and loved it.

User364837 · 12/12/2024 11:37

On my solos trip to the UK city we all had our own rooms; there was an Itinerary with organised tours etc, we all ate dinner together at the hotel (was included) but people could do off and do their own thing too.
i found it a great balance or organised stuff and some free time/choice and it really got my confidence up.

Knotaknitter · 14/12/2024 18:47

I've just come back from a crafting holiday, not a singles holiday but everyone had come on their own so I wasn't the odd one out with a room full of couples. You all share the same interest so there's something to talk about over the dinner table and most of the day is spent crafting. I didn't think I was good at small talk with strangers but apparently I can talk about knitting all day.

Hello Everyone, I'm going to have buy a takeaway because I burnt the roast, then steak pie but wouldn't say what I was doing so they laughed together as children do saying she's no clue whatever it is but 2 dinner's, this one is serious. I said so is being in you're latter 20's & going to be 18, they both said, she's trying to get a holiday alone, which they were both right. My problem though is I am disabled, can't walk far atall, been reliant on someone who didn't want to see myself or his wee brother with his disabilities that way. So.......please tell me there is someone that knows about single women travelling but most importantly that it's Mums....Catch you all at the beaches ⛱️ Ohhh Noooo, forget to phone for dinner. Xxx

monsterfish · 26/01/2025 18:22

Try Exodus - you can ask about the group mix beforehand to get a feel for a group & also pay a bit extra for your own room.

much better adventures are worth considering as are skyhook, depending on what you want to do.

tougholdbirdy · 26/01/2025 18:22

Another vote for HF holidays in Uk. They offer different Holidays noy just walking. Special interests, sightseeing with walks etc. I would say nearly half are solo people.

AndThereSheGoes · 26/01/2025 18:53

I went solo on a Tui last minute holiday to the Canaries.
It was very Brits abroad and not a holiday I would have considered if I was going with friends and family. But a) it was super easy as transfers etc were all part of it and b) there were a good few other single people.
There were plenty of Tui organised trips and activities and also it was very easy to buy your own from local operators. Going out in the evening was a bit trickier if you didn't book something but there were shows cinema and music festival so I did meals on my balcony or by the pool and just went out after.

tougholdbirdy · 27/03/2025 18:31

Really recommend HF Holidays. They have a number of country houses (hotels) and offer a range of Holidays. Mainly walking, but a variety of abilities etc , including gentle walking, walking and sightseeing… And other interests such as art and photography. I would say nearly half are singles. You eat together so never alone. It’s full board with packed lunches provides and transport to and from walks etc. single supplements ( if charged) very reasonable. I have done several, and hope to do many more . If night life is your thing then probably not for you, but all have a bar and there’s usually something happening in the evening , quiz etc .

Another vote for HF. They are best known for walking holidays but also do a range of craft, special interest and music holidays. Walking & Special Interest Holidays - HF Holidays

I'm going on a drawing holiday in June.

HF Holidays - Walking Holidays

HF Holidays organise guided walking holidays, self guided walking holidays, leisure and activity breaks in the UK, Europe and worldwide. Which? Recommended."
