Looking for a city break for my 50th in late September - ideally somewhere eithet on Eurostar or easy to flight from stansted. Any ideas gratefully received!

How long will you go for? What sort of things do you like doing?

Favourites of mine: Seville, Budapest, Valencia, Lisbon, Barcelona (though loads say they don't like it), Montpellier, Madrid, Prague(though it's got a bit overrun these days) or staying around Nice (Antibes)

By Eurostar you could do Bruges and Ghent - stay in one and visit the other. Or Rotterdam, The Hague and Delft - close enough to easily visit all over a long weekend. For shops, food and the odd museum I really like Antwerp.

Seville is under 3 hrs flight and still really warm at the end of September.

Thanks all! I like mainly walking around looking at gorgeous architecture shopping and drinking/eating. Not into clubbing at my advanced age!

Bruges is lovely and you can do by Eurostar. Or Krakow has flights from Stanstead - lovely clean city and easy to get around (and cheap!)

Porto. Great, reasonably priced food, lovely wine, amazing architecture.

Be careful with Eurostar. They cancelled our train back at short notice which rather spoiled the end of our long weekend...

I absolutely love Rome. Everything is walkable in one day!

Bergamo. A lovely Italian town about an hour from Milan, and Ryanair's biggest hub apart from Stansted. People who are going to Milan complain about the distance (Ryanair of course calls it "Milan Bergamo") but they are missing out on Bergamo itself. It's gorgeous. There is the lower town (modern, Italian/Apline), the upper town (medieval/renaissance) at the top of a funicular, and the upper upper town at the top of a second funicular with great views over all of it. Everything that you love about Italy in a neat little package with not too many tourists.
