I've been putting this off for too long because I've been so worried I will be a lonely emotional wreck going away on my own. But I've decided to just bite the bullet as I need a break from work. I want somewhere that is short haul and fairly cheap. I don't want to be hassled too much but some kind of fly and flip break with some sun and a pool would be great. I'm thinking I'll book it now so I can't change my mind later. I want to spend as little as possible in case I hate being away on my own then if I love it I'll book something longer and further. Any suggestions welcome!

Hi OP,
The most important part is to go, go, go! And the second most important thing is 'Don't look down!' just go for it, you'll be FINE!

Might you fancy going somewhere familiar and catching up on sights you haven't seen? (e.g. Paris has loads of museums and cafés in different areas; I went to some places with a friend from uni that I hadn't visited with my DH)

Don't be afraid to sign up for a package for your first time. There are 'singles' groups going all the time. At a minimum, you can hate them. :)

Or do you have a hobby/activity? Other friends of mine sign up for a cooking course or a painting course or a history tour/walk through a Belgian/Nederlands city. This gives a focus to the day, an activity they like and a chance to meet other likeminded travellers. Other friends have found a language course and gone to a lesson each morning in the local tongue and then practised all day.

From UK the western world is your oyster via short flights: do you want a winter break, relishing the dark, maybe to the northern lights (teen DC and I are doing this in Feb half-term), or do you want a warmer weekend so south to Spain (we had a great week in Barcelona over Easter with DH pre-covid), Portual or France?

Once you've had a great holiday, you'll be back in the saddle.

Try Benalmadena on the Costa del Sol. You fly to Malaga, then the transfer is an easy train.

When I was in this position I went to Malta. Very easy to get around, civilised, no hassle, warm , lotsa history and sights to see or you can just flop on the beach/balcony.

I went to Athens because I'm into history and food. The Athenians were awesome, so kind and friendly. Eating out is reasonable as long as you stick to tavernas located away from landmarks. The BIG THINGS TO DO were pricey to get into but you can buy a combined museum/historical sights ticket which works out cheaper. There are parks to chill out in and lots and lots of cats (if you lihe them). I spent four nights there and had a wonderful time, & now want to go back and explore more of the region.
