Is a 3 and a half hour changeover long enough? (Manchester-Singpore-Perth) I am thinking delays and missing the connection

flying from Manchester to Perth on Singapore Airlines

3.5hrs in Singapore Airport

what happens if I am delayed? do I wallow in self pity for days in the airport or what?

there is an alternative flight with 11 hours but I think that is too long

I have done a 2 hour change over before in America and recall sprinting through the airport, hard enough with me and dh, god help us with 2 whinging children

advice please

I think it sounds fine. Singapore airport is quite easy to get around, even if you need to change terminals. Flights usually arrive on time, even if they are a bit late leaving, they often make it up on those really long haul flights.
Also, as you are flying SIA all the way, they will take very good care of you and won't let you languish in the airport if they are horrendously delayed. I would book the 3.5 hour and worst case if you miss it because flight is delayed they will get you on the 11 hour one.
Enjoy your trip!

yes I agree on airport, it was v clean last time I went

I am going on Singapore as most others go via London/Paris/Frankfurt/Whatever and I want only one changeover hopefully

OO, 3 and a half hours is ample IMO. I was in Singapore airport only the other week. Our transfer time was 2 hours and we had to go and buy new clothes for ds3 who had just vomited down his clothes as the plane came in to land. You don't actually go anywhere, just off the plane and move to your new gate, not through security or customs or anything (though they did security check us again at the gate).

In fact, I have changed planes at Singapore several times and have never needed more than about 30 minutes chageover. the main problem is finding anything to do while you wait (the children loved playing on the travelator!)

I think you'll be fine with a 3 1/2 hour transfer time in Changi. Also they will likely start the boarding an hour before.

Its so much nicer than any US airport for a start!.

They are very strict on all manner of liquids and you won't be allowed to take any bottles of water onto the second flight. I mention that because although you can buy water airside the actual security checkpoint is located near the jetway itself.

I need to read up on all the new rules, have not flown for eons

The limit you can carry in hand luggage is 100ml bottles although my contact lens fluid was in a 120ml bottle and no-one raised a fuss about that. Hula hoops are fine! even going into Australia.

Check out:

  1. Will each passenger get 2 tickets for each flight?
if so....
  1. Will I have to go through passport control in Perth, collect my bags and then re-check in, for Singapore to Perth??

If the answer is NO ie, all on 1 ticket all the way through to final destination and your bags will be interlined, (taken care of for you) I would be jumping up and down and very excited.

Are you booking direct with the airline?

Oliveoil · 29/04/2008 20:52

I am doing research atm and Singapore is coming up tops

when I did a 4 connect back from Canada once (don't ask) we checked in in Calgary and got our bags back in Manchester, so am presuming it will be straight through, ie check in once and that is it

Confirm it with the airline, or pop into a travel agency & ask them; that way you might have some sort of comeback if things were to go wrong. I used to be a travel agent & we had a book which gave us minimum connection times for particular routes/airports.

Oliveoil · 29/04/2008 21:02

the first one, says plane changeover under details...

SNoraWotzThat · 29/04/2008 21:16

the link doesn't work
can you email them and ask about the connection?

Oliveoil · 29/04/2008 21:19

i wonder why the link didn't work, how bizarre!

yes, will do when I am ready to book, it will be a while yet

You will probably find that you re-board at either the same gate or within a couple of gates. Singapore is the easiest place on earth to change planes - I too have done it with a 2 hour transfer and it's fine. There are a couple of small play areas around, fine to occupy small kids for a bit, and free internet access to you can MN while you wait

MrsMattie · 30/04/2008 11:53

Sounds fine. We had a 3 hour stopover in Singapore en route from London-Sydney. It was just the right amount of time. DS stretched his legs, I had a massage in one of their cheap, pay by the 5 min massage booths , we had noodles, we got back on the plane . I think our flight got into Singapore about 40 mins late and it was still fine.

janinlondon · 30/04/2008 12:03

Have often done this connection with way less than 3 hours. No problems at all. In fact with two hours we managed to spend an hour in the pool up on the roof...
