Sa Coma - hotel recommendations? Biomar worth the cost?

Looking at Sa Coma for June. Not been to the area at all before but the beaches look nice for Ds aged 13 to swim in (hopefully?!) and just after a relaxing summer break. We’ve been to Ibiza before and loved the beaches there and would just like to try somewhere similar but a different island. Ds and I have disabilities (Ds has autism, I have lupus etc). So not looking for huge water parks or anything child / teen geared - he’s more into beaches, nice food, walking round shops etc.

I am torn between these hotels - all in the same area, almost next door to each other. Obviously I’m reading trip advisor and google reviews and whatever else I can find but any personal advice / suggestions welcome.

I like the look of Biomar but it’s £1k plus between that and the Safari park one for example and I can’t work out whether it’s worth the difference? 🤔

I haven’t been for years but pre Covid we paid several repeat visits to Biomar having previously also stayed at Sa Coma Playa in the same complex.
First I’m going to be absolutely honest here - the Safari park hotel is - or was then - loud noisy, crowded and more downmarket than the other hotels in the complex. Numerous tattoos, smokers and screaming sunburned children. I know this because you walk through their pool area to get to the ( excellent) crazy golf and little boats etc.

I think there’s an aparthotel too in same development which gets good reviews. Sa Coma Playa Hotel was very nice. The Biomar - was then - amazing. Quite civilised pool area, lovely food - not all buffet - could ask chef at stations for eg omelette in morning or steak etc in evening. Every Thursday they had a big outside gala barbecue in the pretty garden.
Access to the water park and other facilities of the complex but in more civilised surroundings.

Sa Coma isn’t the best or prettiest resort but fine especially when staying on this large complex. However if you’re not wedded to the location, look at Puerto Pollensa in the North for a very civilised pretty place to stay. And a shallow very safe clean beach. Google it. The Hoposa hotel group is great. Several options.

Also I see that Protur Biomar became a Tui Sensatori- I hope they retained the Protur management who were the best I’ve ever encountered - there from moment dining room opened until last guest left. Ever present trouble shooting and checking guests bring looked after all day long.

I have been to Protur Safari Park the last two years and my experience could.not have been more different than the other posters. Went end of June and it was all young families yes but generally quiet. It's about a 8 minute walk to the beach. My dd is also autistic and she had a great time.
I know the rooms are being refurbished this year.

PS In my longtime love affair with Mumsnet’s family favourite Puerto Pollensa - The Hoposa Pollensa Mar is a steal for PP which is an expensive place to stay for good reasons. Get a top floor room and you may luck out on best view out to sea between buildings in front row to Pine Walk.

However, My favourite is sea view room modern block Hoposa Uyal.

Hope you have a great time wherever you end up.

Thank you very much for the replies so far. So helpful. Interesting to hear the two different points of view so far!

I am going to google Puerto Pollensa and have a look into that and the recommended hotel there too.

Not necessarily tied to this particular resort but like the idea of everything being close at hand and would prefer to book with Tui as with our disabilities we get a lot of special assistance through them (private blue badge taxi transfers, boarding help etc) which makes things easier for us.

It’s always hard to make a decision and then I spend the entire time worrying I’ve picked the wrong ‘un. 😬🙈😂

PP is pretty perfect. Safe beach right next to pine wall/ prom. Numerous restaurants. Not a big resort hotel place. No night clubs. Lovely old town Pollensa to visit by excellent bus service or old town Alcudia which is magnificent walled old Roman town - walk the walls like in York. Good luck

When considering resorts look at distance from Palma, especially if the transfer might be tricky for you.
I've been to Calla Millor which is next to Sa Coma and it's a good hour by taxi. Double that if using coach.

Thanks, an hour or so in a private transfer taxi is fine. Ds will enjoy looking out of the windows / iPad etc etc. It’s mainly screaming babies and loud toddlers he really struggles with in terms of autism difficulties. He attends specialist school and is in a small class of 6 children with 3 teachers so does need a fair bit of support but it’s mainly loud noises of other children that he can find difficult. He has ear defenders etc but doesn’t want to have to use these all the time.

I’ve been to Biomar. Lovely hotel. Food, service, rooms were all great. But pools were cold, though admittedly in May. Safari park very loud and full on - we had to walk through it to get to the onsite amusement park/water park. Sa coma was ok. Quite tacky beach resort. But our kids liked it.

Thanks for your reply. Hmm I hope the pools won’t be too cold in late June! 😳🤞

Bit alarmed and intrigued to hear Sa Coma described as tacky. Not really what we were hoping for but equally happy with a mixture of traditional seaside / beach stuff and a prettier, sweeping white sands beach bit so hopefully we can find that there!

Sa coma is a bit tacky but not magaluf standards or anything like that. If you want upmarket, go North as I’ve said.

woffley · 25/11/2024 13:29

It's only tacky by MN Puerto Pollensa standards. It's absolutely fine for a family holiday. Good beaches. Late June the pool should have warmed up a bit although the best time for a warm pool and sea is early September.

EvelynBeatrice · 25/11/2024 13:35

@woffley I agree. We spent many happy holidays in the Protur resort. Kids when young enjoyed hiring a bicycle cart thing at beach consisting of them riding fairground type plastic horses up front while we puffing parents cycled them along in the canopied back! Had a race at one point with young German couple on scooters 😁 But we didn’t go to the beach often. Stayed in resort or Hired a car and went to gorgeous Arta etc.

EvelynBeatrice · 25/11/2024 13:37

I just thought with a kid on the spectrum, the quieter vibe in PP might be preferable- but if, like ours in younger years, he’d prefer chance to make friends in one stop shop type hotel with loads on hand, then maybe Protur is the answer.
