We like nice beaches, lots of history, friendly people, and no to big hotels.

We prefer smaller places off the beaten track/package holiday brigade.

Cuba generally stamps your tourist card - not your passport - so that you don't have to worry about ESTA.

Persoannly, whilst Havanna is the "go-to" place, I much prefer Santiago de Cuba. But Cuba isn't very big - you can easily go everywhere with a modicum of planning. She says, going every year to do another bit!

The question asks if you have visited the country not whether you have the passport stamp. I have visited a different country on the No ESTA list and don’t have any stamps in my current passport but I would be reluctant to lie on the ESTA application in case of being found out. For some reason I feel much more reluctant to lie to the US authorities compared to other countries where I have lied on visa applications a few times.

USA can and will check airline manifests against names for Cuba, it doesn't matter if they don't stamp your passport or not.

Living in Cayman Islands, we had some real problems with people who have travelled to Cuba in the past. Originally USA said anyone who'd been there from March 2011 would require full USA visa but I think have changed it to 2021.
Given short distance from here, many of us went to Cuba (thankfully my last trip was 2011) but the government had to liaise with US given our national airline goes to Havana.

In any event, far better places to travel in the Caribbean than Cuba.

I've been to the British Virgin Islands, Grenada, Antigua, St maartens and Barbados.

The places that are really off the beaten track don't have much history in terms of places you can visit like castles or stately homes in the U.K.,

I loved the British Virgin Islands but it is mostly sea sun and sand. (We sailed)
