Been offered a house to stay in for free next year by a colleague so im just wondering if 10 days is too long, I can see there are some thing to do in SD, Whale watching is on my bucket list, Love the outdoors and beaches, walking, eating. Not fussed by shopping.

Any recommendations or ideas of where else to go and maybe stay for a day/night or two. For some reason LA doesnt appeal to me, unless im missing something. Thinking of next september.

You can do a day trip south to Mexico. I think Rosarita is down there. North of SD is Orange County which has the gorgeous Laguna Beach and Newport Beach, there’s San Juan Capistrano, desert sunrises, Disney Land and Knotts Berry Farm. There’s probably loads more. It’s a beautiful part of the world.

Bite their hand off - San Diego is my favourite city in the world. So much to do/see - try to see a baseball or NFL game while you are there, explore the amazing coastline, great food scene, venture into Mexico, take day trips to other places in California. I’m very envious of you!

Don’t bother with Tijuana on the US Mexico boarder because it’s a dump. Newport Beach is worth a visit as is San Juan Capistrano.

Knotts Berry Fsrn is located in Buena Park which is a city within the sprawl that is LA. It would take at least 90 minutes to drive there each way depending on traffic.

You may be able to see a baseball game but San Diego no longer have a NFL team as they relocated to LA.

San Juan Capistrano is lovely- go to the Tea House on Los Rios!

As a student we did say trips to Universal Studios and Disneyland from San Diego. There's also the world famous zoo of course.

The best thing is the weather, especially if the offer is in the summer.

Well I’d move to San Diego if I could so 10 days would be heaven for me! I’d go up to the OC for a few days. I’ve stayed in Newport Beach which was fab and visited Laguna Beach which was lovely. Disneyland California is also my favourite Disney park.

I agree with all the pp's recommendations above, I am lucky as my American best friend lived there, and it is a fantastic city.

An hours drive away from San Diego is a proper small
American town called Julian. It is touristy but not bonkers busy, lots of charming little shops and Miners Diner an original 50's diner that serve divine milkshakes.
In September they hold the 'Apple Pie Festival'

Have a brilliant time!

Another one who would do this at a drop of a hat.

We love the US and holiday fairly regularly there, but SD is the one place we have been back to several times and the one place we would happily relocate to.

Places to visit:
-La Jolla and Mount Soledad
-Balboa Park
-San Diego Zoo
-Coronado
-USS Midway Aircraft Carrier
-Mission Bay Park
-Baseball game

  • of course, all the beaches.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with either Tijuana - we went about 20 years ago, and it just felt like a day of looking over your shoulder constantly as people try to sell you things - or LA - just a massive suburb. Although you may get cheaper flights via LAX - if so, it's an east 2 hour drive from San Diego.

September is a great month to go - weather will be really good still. We were there from October 12 to 17 this year and it was still 23°c.

I just got back. We went tk palm springs which has an amazing cable car up a mountain. The views are amazing. I'd definitely day trip it or maybe overnight then you can also go to the Joshua Tree national park which is one hour from palm springs. That's beautiful too.

They have lovely coastal national parks. Definitely got to point Loma for sunrise assuming you are on UK time you will be up early. Could take head torches to make finding your way easy. I read about people doing that in Joshua Tree to get to the best sunrise spots.

We stayed in temecula wine country an hour from SD. Its gorgeous and different. Temecula old town is fun for a wander.

SD has crap public transport so you'll need a car.

We enjoyed balboa park and you could spend several days there getting a pass to see more museums. I didn't do museums just wandered and saw a free open air concert. The zoo is there but I wasn't fussed.

The Embarcadero and seaport village is great for a wander.. if I go back and have longer I will go and look round the USS midway.

I loved Coronado Island. Chilled out. Lovely diner lunch. Beachy.

There is easily 10 days of things to do within SD as its a huge area even if didn't go all up the coast in the direction of LA which you will probably want to do.

If you haven't been to universal I'd go to that if you like theme parks.

mitogoshigg · 17/11/2024 08:50

The wildlife park is great (sister to the zoo) lovely beaches too. Drive inland to the desert, see the Joshua trees.

"I loved Coronado Island. Chilled out. Lovely diner lunch. Beachy."
Fun Fact: They filmed part of Some Like it Hot in the Coronado Hotel and on the beach.

Sounds unanimous that its a good place to travel to. Thanks.

I remember going to Knotts berry farm when i was 6...
