Best way to travel round Manhattan

So I'm going for my 40th in February due to muscular Dystrophy I'm not able to walk very far very fast! We are staying near Central Park but would like to see Time Square, grand central station, Empire States building and Rockefeller centre too but they're further south. What is the best way to get around I'm assuming the subway but is that the best way?

The subway is good and wil get you close to where you need to be are you ok with the stairs.

If you can afford it yellow cabs. Seemed to be quite a cheap way to travel when I was ladt there many moons ago. Have a great trip.

Some, but not all, of the subway stations have lifts.
If you do take a cab, use Uber.. There's a flat fee so the meter is not ticking in the heavy traffic, the cars are clean and well-maintained and the drivers are polite.

Subway is great, just come back from NYC and found the trains great and cheaper than the underground. The stations are shallower than London, so therefore not quite so many steps. Be prepared for some interesting characters” on the trains, same as London !

the Ubers were good as well, although same as anywhere they get stuck in traffic

I absolutely loved NYC and want to go back. Hope you have a lovely birthday out there xx

If the yellow cab gets stuck in traffic the meter keeps ticking and the fare goes up accordingly. There is no quoted fare.
If the Uber gets stuck in traffic you pay the agreed-on fare no matter how long the ride takes.

Agree with the above, but also to add that yellow taxis have a flat rate to the airport - I think generally that makes it better than uber for that specific journey but I haven’t been in a few years so not sure if pricing at the moment.

Its a flat rate from, not to the airport.
That's the only yellow cab ride for
which there is a flat fare. It's a city regulation.

@MummyBearBoo We are staying near Central Park

Not sure where you will be located - Central Park is 2.5 miles long and a half a mile wide.
Which subway station will be closest to you?

Bramblecrumb · 10/11/2024 14:27

Citymapper is your friend here. Avoid the rickshaws. Central Park etc is absolutely huge so make sure you're planning your routes around what you want to see. When I lived there, I stuck to subways or Uber, never used the buses. Definitely visit Time Square at night and be prepared to avoid all the chuggers!

MissHalloween · 10/11/2024 14:49

I stayed in Midtown and used Ubers, I never had to wait more than a minute for one.
Like others have said get a plan for Central Park as it’s massive.

Also consider the NYC ferries for longer trips ie to Brooklyn or 9/11, Wall St area. We Uber’d to the 34th St ferry port and then got the ferry when we wanted to get to the bottom of Manhatten with a wheelchair user. Great views and very cost effective for longer trips. A 10 pack of tickets was $29 and anyone in the party can use them.

If you can manage it, the subway is fast and cheap. As others have said it is not as deep as the Underground - think similar to the District and Circle line - so there are stairs rather than lifts or escalators.

It is also pretty crowded at rush hour.
